Muffler change?
Do any of the top exhaust manufactuers sell their mufflers separately? I'm looking to get a little deeper sound out of the exhaust on my Firehawk. I like the setup that SLP put on it, just thought if I switch to a less restrictive muffler I could get a deeper sound out of it, and wouldn't have to drop as much cash if I were to put a whole exhaust system on. Could anyone recommend one that would be a good fit/replacement to the one that's already there? I don't know much about changing exhausts, so does what I'm asking even make sense?

Yes, most companies will sell you just the crossflow style muffler.
What brand(s) were you interested in? - Justin |
I have looked at Borla, Magnaflow, and Corsa...any others recommended? The only company that seemed to have individual mufflers listed on their website was Borla, but I don't think theirs would fit properly. To my knowledge, my current muffler has a 3" inlet with a 2 1/2" outlet on each side—not sure of the case size, but all the dimensions should be the same as the stock ones on a WS6 or Z/28. The closest Borla is listed with a 3" inlet, but the outlets are 2 1/4. I'd like to find something that would fit well with what's already there.

the cars i heard that i personally think sound the best are with chambered style mufflers...gmmg, sweet thunder, and stainlessworks... personally i think im gonna go with gmmg or stainlessworks..... other suggestions are you didnt have are dynomax bullets (loud as hell) and hooker (not that loud idle cruise but real deep tone and pretty loud wot)

check out spintech. i plan on swapping on onto my 90 real soon.

Worth a look.

I'm not quite sure if I understand the inlet/outlet descriptions correctly. I've been seeing ones online that say "center-center," "center-side," "center-offest," "center-dual," "side-side," "side-dual," etc... On my car right now, looking at it on the driver's side of the muffler is one outlet, and on the passenger's side is the other outlet plus the inlet for the over axle pipe. What exactly would that be called?

I would go with either Borla if cost isnt a issue or or if cost is a issue Magnaflow, GMMG are good and sound awesome too but pretty expensive also, But i thought the Firehawks came with good flowing low restriction SLP exhaust?? you could always put a bullet Style muffler in it like a Loudmouth if you don't mind a lot of interior resonance at 2,000 rpm cruising but if you plan on having headers on your car in the future get one of the other 3 brands

Oh yeah check out LS1SOUNDS.COM they have tons of video clips with sounds of F-body cars with all brands of exhaust systems. Sorry forgot about it in the original post.

spintechs flow pretty bad....dyno results over on ls1tech say 17hp loss over a cut out on a 2001 camaro..... gmmg magnaflow dynomax ect flow much better
flowmaster flows like **** spintech isnt great but not horrible either but sounds nice sweet thunder is decent and sounds awsome but 125 a muffler i cant say this stuff from experiance but i've really been doin my research on ls1.com ls1tech.com ect as im looking to do an exhaust system on my t/a soon |
SLP did put a pretty good system on the car. It is low restriction and has a decent idle, but could sound a little better while crusing. Do I really need to change it? Probably not. It's just sound. But like I said if I could find something a little better that fits well with the pipes and rest of the system I'd probably do it. I think I'd like to see what others have on their cars first...would probably give me a better idea than just looking on websites and at pictures.

The SLP systems are very good as they are. I don't know what you have done yet, but headers and a low restriction cat would be a good idea.

Just a reminder we here at the exhaust guys do sell mufflers seperately as well as most other aspects of the exhaust system(tail pipes midpipes) You can get Magnaflow, Flowmaster(dronemaster) Pypes IMCO performance(sounds a little like flowmaster without the drone or the power loss) or even a turbo muffler if your low on cash but want a little more rumble. And of course we do sell stock type mufflers. email streetofdreams2004@yahoo.com for more info or to place an order. As usual NJFBOA members get wholesale pricing.

JUst get an slp loudmouth. The whole system is about 300-330 depending on where you go. Might be too loud for you but I love mine.

What have you guys heard about Mufflex-performance in Trenton ?? anything good or bad, I've heard nothing but positive things with some of their custom stainless exhaust work they do by some people that run their F-bodys at Atco?? just curious because their going to be doing my custom Y-pipe to mount up to my QTP L.T. for me in a couple weeks
|
mufflex is awesome. great guys, totally know their ****, and the owner is a racer too, so he understands how we think. denny is a great guy to deal with.
|
great guys there.... they did the exhaust system on my truck and im taking the t/a there sat to have a bung welded in then to get tuned by foff... then towards summer ima either have them do a custom stainless catback or install a gmmg catback or custom td's i havent decided yet :{
|
Cool i'm glad to hear postive stuff about them because in the next 3 weeks i'm having QTP F Body LS1 1 3/4 High Velocity Long Tube Header With 3" collectors so their going to be doing my custom fab catted 3"Y-pipe i look forward to seeing their work.

I can understand wanting a louder muffler but if you're concerned with flow keep the SLP. It's one of the best flowing mufflers out there.
