Tranny problems, need advice/info. 96/6speed
For the last month my clutch has been slipping rather badly... sometimes its very apparent, i mean even light gas and the rpms will roar for a few seconds before it starts moving... sometimes its almost fine. my clutch was slipping 2 years ago when it was brand new, but it "fixed itself" in a week or so so i never looked into it. so i;ve decided i want to upgrade to a spec clutch and alum flywheel just for the hell of it, but i noticed that in 1st gear occassionally i get a really loud nasty grinding rusty metal kinda sound when engaging. it happens maybe 1ce a week, but it cant be good. it only happens when i shift into 1st, and only occassionally, but i figured id ignore it since id be getting a new clutch/flywheel soon anyway. BUT heres the thing... someone mentioned that it sounded like the snycros are going...which is causing the noise/slipping possibly... i know little about transmissions so i couldnt tell you one way or another... but i figure since i'm having the new stuff put in, id have them replace the syncros while they are in there just for ****s and giggles. where can i order them, how much are they, and how long an operation is it? i'm having a garage do it so dont tell me anything particular, as i wont even be in the same building when its getting done, i dont me own work on anything drivetrain related as i fear id **** somethin up. intake, exhuast, radio, interior, electronics... fine. load bearing hardware? pfft.
any input would be great, thanks guys! |
synchros wouldn't make the trans slip, synchros are more about helping you go from gear to gear smoothly.
the grinding could a number of things. anything from teh clutch is toasted and the rivets are hitting the flywheel, to the throwout bearing, to something internal starting to let go. |
Well I imagine then its the clutch since it was giving me problems before... but do you think just replaceing the clutch and fly will resolve my problems? id hate to have to pay for 2 installations, 1 for the clutch and then again for something else when i find out its still making that noise.

the best bet woudl be to get the clutch adn flywheel you want ordered and then have a shop that deals with T56's a lot do the install and check over teh trans while you are there.
i know TTP does T56 work, including full build ups. i think they did transamforlife's not too long ago. |
my clutch made loud metal grinding noises when it went, but it was basically undriveable, not just occasional. If i gave it over like 1/4 throttle, it would slip and grind. In my case i spun the splines inside the clutch disc itself. But from what you're describing, i dont think thats your problem since it would happen much more often.

I've heard mixed things about TTP, hows there reputation?
|
They have a very good reputation with the members here, however they deal mostly with LS1s. They may be able to help you out with the trans issues though.
