yea im thinkin about tryin a few major linux distros again cuz kubuntu is giving me slight problems. im downloading SuSE 10.0 dvd right now and has anyone ever tried mandriva? i used mandrake a lil bit back in the day but dont remember it much...

any recommendations?

project89 03-28-2006 08:43 PM

ive used mandrivia, mandrake with new name is all, everything is still pretty much the same ,im still partial to mdk 10.1 community over the new versions though

bad64chevelle 03-28-2006 08:53 PM

Savage_Messiah 03-28-2006 08:57 PM

I use windows XP and it works fine, all you techno geeks say it sucks but run into all these problems using other things...

Brando56894 03-28-2006 09:26 PM

yea i dont feel like paying the $75-100 for mandriva then having to pay a monthly subscription fee to get the updates, thats the reason i stopped using it in the first place. and as for windows xp, theres wayy to much daily maintence that need to be done with it and the stupid clean access thing wont let me on...

Savage_Messiah 03-28-2006 09:28 PM

I don't do any daily maintenence on mine. I do liek semi annual maintanence lol

Brando56894 03-28-2006 09:32 PM

and its prolly like slow as balls isnt it?

project89 03-28-2006 09:34 PM

linux = teh pwn. lmao brando just stick with the 10.x version and setup an online update database and it will automatically update itself

Brando56894 03-28-2006 09:35 PM

but the basic one doesnt come with GCC or anything so u gotta go out and hunt for it dont u? also i didnt see a way that you could freely download it

project89 03-28-2006 09:39 PM

it comes with everything

http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=29

goto that page and download version 10.1

Brando56894 03-28-2006 09:46 PM

i knew there was the english site! i went to linuxiso.com and it brought me to the outdated german site  its gonna take me forever to download it right now for the suse 10.1 dvd iso its gonna take me around 50 hours, stupid college internet......

project89 03-28-2006 09:50 PM

WildBillyT 03-28-2006 11:06 PM

I've run RedHat 7.3 on my web server for years and it has never given me any problems.

i've never had any problems with my XP, and most of my friends switched over to it after seeing how quick my comp ran.

Brando56894 03-29-2006 01:32 AM

i doubt your computer is faster then mine but i can see how your internet is faster then mine considering that each dorm is pretty much its own seperate network and the towers are like 2x the size of century

Mandrake, Debian or Redhat FTW

GP99GT 03-29-2006 11:07 AM

ive been using XP for a couple years...if you dont suck at computers, it wont get slow. and you dont have to "clean it" every day. ive never had XP get corrupted, slow, or anything like that, unless it was a hardware problem.

bokey 03-29-2006 12:40 PM

I would say go with Red Hat. It's probably your best bet; for the most part it is stable and robust as hell.

I have Red Hat ver. 9 or 10 at my house. If you’re interested I can burn you a copy and mail it to ya.

Tru2Chevy 03-29-2006 01:45 PM

XP is great....considering it's Windows.

I'm digging OS X more and more as time goes on. And having the terminal to play with is very nice :)

Anywho...Once H3idi is back up and running I'm prolly gonna try FreeBSD. I used it some in college and enjoyed it greatly.

from what ive heard debian is a PITA to install, well essentially i am running debian, just in the form of kubuntu. i tried red hat back in the day (version 7) and didnt really like it that much, i dont think i would use it since they discontinued it so they could work on fedora. i had suse about 10% downloaded and my computer was acting stupid and crashed so i had to restart it :(

bokey 03-30-2006 07:02 AM

That sucks, if you want to you could try sending me the link that your trying to download from. At work, I was able to download all 4 Fedora DVD iso's w/o an issue. It only took about a half a day too 8)

Brando56894 03-30-2006 01:49 PM

i started the download for the mandrake dvd iso lastnight when i got back from the trucks and let it go all night, when i woke up this afternoon it was done. so i burned the iso and then had to fight with this POS Abit IS7 mobo (which i thought was decent, definately switching back to my Asus board once i get the bios reflashed) to get it to boot the dvd. i had to disable the boot of the HDD then put it in the master cd/dvd burner and then it proceeded and then gave me an error that it couldnt uncompress the 2nd stage ramdrive and told me that it wa most likely a hardware error. i gave up and i figure ill try it when i swap mobos
