have a 400 - .030 4 bolt with as with most stock 400 blocks ( small crack in center head bolt thread ) every one we ever raced did this, it is also 1/2 filled with hard block its still useable not junk if you know anybody needs will let go cheep as we have been going away from small blocks jz

WayFast84 04-22-2006 03:08 PM

no to be an ass but what are your plans now, are you set on building a certain motor of a change, whats up with the lg4

Rob WS6 04-23-2006 12:08 PM

Youll never make enough power to need a 2 bolt block, why waste your time?

NJSPEEDER 04-23-2006 12:52 PM

prolly because it isn't a matter of power that breaks 400 4bolt blocks, it is a matter of a design flaw that lets many crack, even in stock form.

Rob WS6 04-23-2006 01:31 PM

Itll never even run, let alone run enough to crack. And the more power, the more prone to cracking its gonna be. Ive rarely ever seen a stock motor with cracked webbing.

Jared1970Chevelle 04-24-2006 01:10 PM

so is a 400 2 bolt better then a 4 bolt? the 4 bolt were truck motors the car ones were 2 bolt?

whats this design flaw? i plan on doing a 400 block once i get a block...

NJSPEEDER 04-24-2006 02:47 PM

because of the larger bore of the 400 SBC there is less material in the webbing around a few of the main caps. with a 2bolt there is plenty of material to get a strong grip, with a 4bolt the outer bolt holes don't have enough material around them to be as strong.
the issue can be resolved by installing splayed caps and doing som efill welding on the original holes, but that is more work and machine shop time, so most people jsut look for the 2bolt block.

so tim ur saying the 400 motor i got for free is worth some dough? nice. btw Chevys "4 bolt" main is a joke, tis more of a hype then it is strength

wayfast, if I were in your position I would build up a 383 instead. You'll save some money going that route because you'd be buying a 350 block (very common) and you wouldnt have to worry about the block cracking as easily. that just my thoughts on the matter.

2botl vs 4botl mains did mean something back in the day when jim-bob was grain balancing the crank by eye. with modern computer balancing and how far materials have advanced it really isn't as important as it used to be.

trashman01 04-25-2006 06:44 PM

ahhh ok thanx
