how to find gear ratio?
My friend and I went to do gears on my car this past weekend. One of my other camaro friends gave me his set of what he says are 3.73's that he doesn't want to install. As far as I know and according to my codes on the door my car has 3.23's. When we pulled the gears out of my car we found that the supposed 3.73's were the same as my supposed 3.23's in my car. We also noticed that my rear had been opened and possibly taken apart before. So either my car already has 3.73's or my friend gave me the wrong set of gears and actually gave me 3.23's (which is what I think happened). But how do i tell if he gave me 3.23.s or 3.73's?

to get the ratio, coutn the number of teeth on the ring gear(larger gear) and then count the number of teeth on the pinion gear. divide the ring gear number by the pinion number and you will have the ratio. Also most gearsets will have a stamping on the outer edge of the ring gear stating the ratio.

Or if you dont wanna count teeth... Put the car up in neutral (on a lift) and put a mark on the driveshaft and a mark on a rear tire. Turn the rear tire 1 complete turn and count the number of times the driveshaft turned, but it has to be precise... if it goes around 3 and 3/4 times, then its obviously 3.73s... if it goes around 3 1/4 times then its 3.23's... u catch my drift.

well thats a good thing. lol
when i first opened the rear in my Monte SS, i was expecting 2.73s, but it turned out i had 2.41s. The 3.73 rear i put in it instead really woke it up, and now it doesnt almost stall off the line in 1st gear with the T5. |
