Trouble finding twin cats

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a 96 lt1 trans and am looking to purchase two hiflow cats for when I get the headers installed, problem is, I cant find any. every distributor page I have has cats for 93-95 lt1's or ls1's only. i found a few universals but i'm not sure whats what anymore. I have the 1 3/4 inch slp shorty (some say mids) http://www.slponline.com/view_product.asp?P=30017C

it doesnt say how large the tubing is on the headers but i assume where they match up with the cats is factory manifold size (whatever that is, 2.25-2.5"?) since they are designed to mate to the stock cats? so i have no idea what size cats i should get if i have to get universal highflos?

See the Random high flow Y-pipe on the link below. You might still need the SLP adapter kit? I don't know of anyone that sells just hiflow cats for the dual cat LT1s as they have an odd bend on the drivers side. Only thing I've seen high flow is the complete Y-pipe.

Did you find just the cats or did youget the whole pipe? seems like an aweful waste of money to have to replace the whole y jsut to get hiflows

Tsar 05-12-2006 05:29 PM

i was in a hurry so i just bought the whole pipe. and yea i do agree that its a waste of money to just get cats...

What else have you done to your car?

ar0ck 05-12-2006 06:21 PM

At QTP we use Magnaflow Cats they are 3" OBDII Universals and they sell for $50 a cat. Were actually working on producing our own catalytic converters to use with our Y-pipes that are very similar to Random Tech Bullet Cats (300cell)

grandkodiak 05-12-2006 06:30 PM

Isnt the ypipe 2.5" anyway?

JL8Jeff 05-13-2006 09:11 AM

I got a compact 3" cat from Pypesexhaust.com for the driver's side and got a 3" Catco cat for the passenger side. I got them off Ebay so my net cost was like $40 for both. I cut the y-pipe and clamped them in but ended up having the driver's side welded for another $40. Here's my y-pipe with dual 3" cats on my 96 SS.

technically...no...have no more cats on my car, and no more rear 02 sensors and it runs fine...i have the sims, just never installed them yet

if you buy cats they are gonna take a **** on you after you put a cam in your car. cam + cats = crap

grandkodiak 05-14-2006 02:31 PM

what do you mean?

JL8Jeff 05-14-2006 04:01 PM

Only if it's tuned to extreme lean will it kill the cats. Too much heat in the exhaust will melt the cat's internally.
