Found something else cool on the SS396!

My dad was looking at the car and we noticed some moisture under the trunk mat so we pulled it out to dry things off. As I'm getting ready to put it back in I notice some fitting in the trunk floor! It looks like a cap on a valve like a bike tire. I climb under the car and sure enough, it's connected to 2 tiny air lines going to a pair of air shocks on the rear of the car! Yeah Baby! This car was a classic 70's street rod or street racer with jacked up rear and black velour interior! Groovy!

air shocks, wow good luck with them Jeff! We have a pair of them on the Challenger and they will be in the garbage soon. Definitely good if you have a good pair that work!

AIR SHOCKS ARE COOL UNTIL SOMEONE CUTS THE AIR LINE AND THE TIRES HIT THE QUARTER PANNEL

I had them on my 70 challenger, bought em brand new. They were called HiJackers and you got a couple of neat stickers with em.The stickers was a rabbit with big rear legs moveing fast down the road LOL.

I don't plan on keeping them, I just thought it was an interesting part of the car's past.

i have em on the 88 so the wide rear tires wont rub, i melted one of the air lines on the exhaust and just ordered a new hose kit lol, yea they are gabriel hijackers, ive had them in for like 3 years, when i put the stock winter tires on i can lower it back down and it looks normal and i mounted the filler valve just under the rear bumper

Ha Ha yep. I've got a set of tires that somebody (not me, really!) did that to.

I like that location for the fill. Most of the time they are in a PITA spot to get to.

It would be super if they still made that part so I could get rid of it w/o resorting to e-gay. But they don't  That is the only part left of those godforsaken POS airshocks.

Is that piece metal or urethane? 8)

BonzoHansen 07-19-2006 10:22 AM

I guess urethane, it ain’t metal. I got a new one from a kid in FLA. Someday I’ll put it on. :) God damn car is making me mad.

Pampered-Z 07-19-2006 02:23 PM

Put about 150 lbs of air in them until the universal joints bind and the back end is so high that if you don't wear your seat belt you'll slide out of the seat, add a glass pack muffler and you'll be back in the 70s! Yah Baby Yah.

Don't forget broken shock mounts!
