New Inventions to break PITA LS1 header bolts, a must read :-D

So, the header installation process has started today, with the help of allmighty spacestation, we were able to accomplish a little more than expected. Well, this is how it went. Before Vitals arrived to the scene of the crime, I managed to remove the 4 AIR bolts, 4 STB bolts (to make things easier) and 3 header bolts (first one towards the front on passenger side, 2 on the driver side). That was in a 45 minute period. Keep in mind this was around 1:15. So Vitals shows up at 1:30, and we get cracking. Almost breaking my nose on the cat bolts trying to the the y-pipe off to get to the rear header bolts, and many frustrations... we've tried EVERYTHING. So we came up with a new tool called "The 3 1/2 hour FTW" Tool... as pictured below...
http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/5438/1000433mq0.jpg

This tool consists of a 10mm box wrench, a 3-fork garden rake, and a beater screwdriver. The reason its called the 3 1/2 hour FTW Tool, is because we've tried for 3 1/2 hours to try to get that one driver rear header bolt off the car, while this tool only took us about 20 minutes. That was a relief, now onto the other side.

So, with a little fenaggling and twig-like hands of mine, we were able to get all but 1 bolt off the entire exhaust manifold... the last one, the rear passenger bolt. We've came prepared, figured out different strategies, and left us with no choice but to invent yet another useful tool ... "The Spearchucking Tool" as pictured and models by Spacestation himself:

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/9821/1000432ba6.jpg

This tool consists of 2 breaking bars, a socket wrench, a 10mm socket, and twine. Hence the name "Spearchucking Tool", because it looks like something outta Somalian tribes. With this tool, we accomplished the rear bolt in under a half hour from under the car. We finished up all the bolt removal at @9:00.

Headers should be done tomorrow, I gotta saw off the y pipe and everything will pretty much fall. A 2 day project, which was pretty much what I estimated. BTW Wayfast header installation FTL

YOU SHOULD HAVE GAVE ME A CALL I WOULD HAVE HELPED YOU TODAY

deadtrend1 07-17-2006 09:53 PM

you guys skipped a step that i usually do.....

I usually go out and buy newer, cooler expensive tools thinking that they will work .... and dont. Then ghetto rig something up....

edit: it was uberly hot today for me to even think about doing work on the cars. I waited till the sun went down to start putting the interior back in the 86. Me and Rob_ws6 were still sweating like mad putting the trim pieces on. heat waves suck...

enRo 07-17-2006 10:05 PM

I was also wondering why the car was getting lower on the jackstands... the paved driveway became "soft" and the jackstands sunk about 2 inches

**Edit* All due to the madness of heat

Was working on the starter on mine and couldnt figure out why it was more difficult to remove the stands when I was done - they sunk into the pavement. Hadn't happened before. Guess the heat makes the pavement more "dynamic" huh?

Congrats on the ghetto tools, guys. As Murphy's law states - "If its stupid but works, it isnt stupid."
