So... I may torch the genie mobile

Radiator broke.
I replaced it last night.

Straight forward install.

There is no valve to open up to release air in the lines.

I tried letting it idle with the rad cap off... let it warm up, thermo open and you would think coolant would flow and air would come out right?

I tried so many ******** times... each time it got better but I can feel air in the lower radiaotr hose to thermostat.

I got it to idle last night (2:30 AM) w/o overheating.... it just sat in the normal range.

So... the woman took it to work today (I'm having the benz inspected at work for lease turn in... and she can't drive the neon in traffic yet) and I get a call... it ******** overheated.

I'm no rocket scientist.... but WTF?!?!?!?!??!?!

I've changed radiators before in multiple cars and this has NEVER happened!

I went on elantra boards... there is no valve to release built up air.

I even tried letting the car idle w/ the heat on.... to allow more flow of coolant.

So, got any suggestions before I torch it?

i dunno, i always do what you did before and it always worked...

:werd: I do the same thing and never had a problem. I fill it a little bit then run the car and while its running i fill it the rest of the way.

Possible that he radiator broke due to soemthing else? Tstat is working? Water pump leaking at all?

qwikz28 07-25-2006 10:46 AM

i'm with al, maybe a sticky t-stat. mine in my camaro was working but a little sticky. it only overheated at the most inopportune times. replaced the t-stat and i havent had a problem yet.

12secondv6 07-25-2006 11:15 AM

Water pump is fine...... but maybe t stat.

We were discussing it at work and that came up.

Genie and I went last night and tried to buy one from pep boys... they didnt have it in stock though :(

foff667 07-25-2006 11:25 AM

thats the worst part about buying foreign cars...nothing is ever in stock...autozone has them online but not in store...I would just pull the tstat temporarily and just order one.

BigAls87Z28 07-25-2006 11:47 AM

Hyundai's are by far the hardest to find parts for. Korean cars can be a bitch. I didnt have a battery for the cars till about 6 months ago. We used to just use the same that we put in Toy/Hondas.

zoomin iroc 07-25-2006 11:48 AM

T-stat sounds bad, Cheap enough to swap.

-Quick tip. Drill a small hole in the face of the t-stat, Makes purging air pockets a non-event. Have this on all my 3rdgens and my honda.

is the radiator cap the highest part of the cooling system?try getting one of those rad fill funnels,it screws on were the cap would go and lets u raise the water level like 8 inches above the top of the radiator once it gets tha air out u put the plug in and remove the funnel and screw the cap back on.u can buy them at just about any parts store pretty cheap

Savage_Messiah 07-25-2006 01:02 PM

elantras are CRAP! Don't even attempt the rotors... and didja know, the tranny pan is mounted on the FRONT of the trans? and according to very parts catalog, the trans filter is a screw on, yet unlocateable?

enRo 07-25-2006 01:06 PM

You said it was fine at idle... but when she drove it, it overheated... did you forget to put the air dam back in? .02 cents

Savage_Messiah 07-25-2006 01:09 PM

no aim dam

ShitOnWheels 07-25-2006 01:10 PM

Yeah next car won't be an Elantra. I've been happy with it until now. Probably just this getting on my nerves. Wouldn't care if I had another car to drive, but the timing was horrible. UPS coming when they said they would could have helped too (could have had all weekend to work out the problems). So right now it's sitting in a diner parking lot until James can go get it tonight, since I"ve got class.

no...your all wrong. dont listen to them. you need the tool i haveat work, snap on makes it, you connect an air line to it and it vacuums down the system, then you remove that and put on the other tube and it sucks in the coolant completely filling the system. its the best way to do it on anything.
