NJ Inspection
Well it is that time for me again, i have to get my car inspected. damnit. I have a couple of questions tho and hopefully some of you can answer them.
Does the Thermostat have anything to do with the inspection? I put a 160* one in last yr even tho it says "NOT legal for pollution controlled vechicles". will i run the risk of failing with it? I can't see how that could affect anything. I'm thinkin of installing some Mid Length Pacesetters Headers that bolt to the factory Cats, will i still be able to pass with them? i kno u can't pass with LT's, but how bout the shorties? other then that i have managed to stay with in "jesery guidlines" with my car even tho i would love to throw some LT's, rip off the cats, and tint my car out. Damn NJ, with all the trees we have u wouldn't think emmisions would be so important! lol |

it is a 2001 camaro ss. so going by what ur sayin, if i make sure the engine temp is where is norm would be (about the middle of the dial), i should be ok then?
have you heard of any failing for a thermo? |

Nope. Not one code. purrrs like a kitten...a really mad one! lol
the car runs fine, no code or anything. I'm just afraid of failing with a 160* thermo. i mean, the only other thing i have done regarding emmision is a SLP Y-Pipe. I'm getting a new catback soon, Borla. But other then the thermo, i dont have any other things that determin emmisions. also, what CAN you get away with? What can you have? I see a lot of ppl with SLP LT Headers and such, is that legal? What CAN'T you do other then tint in NJ? |
Well, the long tubes are kind of hit-or-miss. If you have long tubes and a catted y, some people will let you get away with it, others won't. Legally the cats can't move from the stock location, but as long as they are there, some inspectors won't bother you.
As long as the car isn't throwing any codes, you shouldn't have any problem currently. When you go to the inspection station they won't put your car on the rollers, you just get an ECM test, where they plug into your computer to make sure that it's passing all of it's self tests and not throwing any codes. - Justin |
rollers? what r they? i have never seen a car run on them. However, when i bought my car it orig had a PA inspection. All i remember is him starting up my car and reving it for a few seconds. i dont remember rollers. Who has to use them?
i read my old inspection sheet. all they have is ECM tests, like you just said so i'm not as paranoid now. lol |

so like a gas station type place will use rollers, but the state inspection stations won't
also, if it says the inspection isn't up until Dec 31st, can i still go like next weekend and get it over with? |
I think you are allowed to go 2 months before your sticker date....not positive on that though.

thanks for ur info man. do you use a public station or a private one? which one is "more forgiving"? if there is one.
I tell ya, if i had it my way i would put on some SLP LT's, rip the cats off, and tint my whole car out. |
you'll pass as long as you have cats & no codes which it sounds like you have now so you should be fine. Once you get headers thats another story. I would just take it through state as it stands...you should pass fine.

for future reference...what about headers...who's d*ck do you have to suck to pass with them? better to go to a private place? does it matter? I see a lot of people on this forum that have LT's, so how do they do it?
Also, is it the increased flow with the headers that cause people to fail, or the fact that the cats are moved from their factory location? I bring this up b/c of the mid length tube (shorty) headers option. Pacesetters says theirs hooks up to the OEM cats in the OEM locations. Do these pass or r u SOL no matter what and ur stuck paying someone off? |

private inspection places tend to be much more lenient IMO. Back when my camaro had to go through inspection, there was a place by me that would tune it until the emissions would pass, then tune it back, even with headers, msd, yada yada yada. It cost me $175 IIRC, but worth it to have a real inspection sticker... i don't have the problem anymore.

Flemington puts people on the rollers unless you are full time AWD.
As for headers, put the LT's on right after you pass. I'm sure they will change the laws between when you get the sticker and when you are due next LOL. |

my dealership does inspections and we dont put cars on the rollers unless they're OBD1. your car would just get hooked up to the computer, have the lights, horn and tires checked and that would be it. you wont pass with tint though, if you have that. As long as your car doesnt throw a code, you'll pass. We charge $75 bucks.
