Need more computer help.

Well I havn't had good luck at all. I recently got a laptop (very very good price) but it doesn't have a CD-ROM drive or a floppy drive. I have an external CD-ROM drive connected via the PCMCIA however I can't boot from it to install the operating system because it is unrecognized. I have the correct drivers to do so, but I don't have a floppy drive! Is there any way to load drivers directly from your hard drive or even better your flash drive, in DOS?

btw just to make clarify everything, yes I have changed the boot options / settings in BIOS

shouldve NOT bought that laptop in the first place  wtf is a laptop good for if it doesnt have a floppy or cdrom drive? Flash drive... No. Dont think its possible. External CD-ROM should work, not sure tho.

whats the specs on the laptop and how old is it

ryanfx 11-11-2006 12:10 PM

it was given to me, 1.4 GHz, 756 mg ram. That's why I have it :)

shane27 11-11-2006 12:14 PM

your PCMCIA slot might not be powerful enough. my laptops PCMCIA slot couldnt even handle a wireless card, i had to use a usb one. and its roughly the same age as yours

GP99GT 11-11-2006 12:43 PM

no shane, the problem he has is that the windows setup disk doesnt have the drivers on it for the PCMCIA slots, so it doesnt even know theyre there. and he cant load the driver from a disk, cause he has no floppy drive. so, basically you need to get an internal cd rom for it, or maybe a USB one...but im not sure if thatll work or not.

ryanfx 11-11-2006 02:00 PM

Well what I did was kind of what GP99GT said. I went on ebay and bought a docking station and a cd rom to go into its module bay. This should without question be able to boot from it. If dell made it so you can not boot from their own docking station, from their own cd rom drive.... there will be much pain to be inflicted!

shane27 11-11-2006 10:56 PM

can't you download the drivers from the manufacturer's site?

ryanfx 11-12-2006 01:39 AM

yes, I have downloaded the drivers... however it wants me to extract them onto a floppy... and I have no floppy drive

gotcha

Brando56894 11-12-2006 01:47 PM

you an integrate the drivers into your windows cd, but then you have to remake the whole cd. check out nliteos.com
