yes i was wondering the same thing, but i was reluctant to post because i thought someone on this website would run this thread of topic with comments such as "hockey sucks" or delete the thread entirely.

i tryed googling the answer but it didnt help, so if anyone can chip in with an intelligent responce, please do.

I honestly don't have a clue why it's spelled that way. I never actually paid much attention to it, to be honest.

the correct answer: the plural is based off the context of the singular. a group, representing individual objects working as one, not jsut a group of that object.
it is from older,more traditional manners of writing and speaking
