How do I fill power steering from empty
 

ok, i know you open the cap and pour it in to fill but let me explain more.

i had the entire power steering system removed from the car. ALL the fluid was drained, from the rack, the cooler, lines pump and resivior... everything. So now its all back together and installed. Is there any tricks to refilling the system? i tried filling the resivior and hoping it would seep down, lol, and i even tried turning the pulley by hand to try to pump it through. but i guess the air pockets are preventing that. The only thing i can think of is to open a fitting on the rack and see if itll drain down that way.... anyone know of any tricks besides that?

See if any of this helps. If not, I could look it up in the service manual for you.

The manual shows a mitii-vac with an adapter to pressure bleed the system. There is not much to the section, but I could scan later it if you want.

ah ok, i honestly didnt even think about turning the wheels. That is good to know now. Thanks. I'll probably mess with it tomorrow and see how it goes.

Currently with my SS, im tryign to get all the systems set and checked before having to start the engine. This weekend im gonna fill the coolant and IF i get enough in, i may try to pressure test it just to see if any major leaks turn up. Id just hate to fire up the car for the first time, then have a major coolant leak. especially since i need to run the car for 20 min to get up to temp and all.

I've done it this way -

1. Jack the frontend up, wheels off the ground.

2. Turn the wheel back and forth from lock to lock a few times.

3. Add fluid.

4. Repeat as necessary until it's full and all the air is out.

Steve's got it right. thats the way I do it when I replace steering racks at work.
