Illegal to pull out of driveway without stopping?

My friend got a ticket for not stopping at the end of their driveway. Meanwhile nobody was coming remotely close, 25mph speed limit, very rural quiet road. The technical name for it was "improper driveway merge" or something like that. Anyone else think that is BS?

I mean I also live on a 25mph, quiet, rural road and don't stop unless somebody is coming. But then again this is Long Valley, where nothing big happens so cops don't have much to do.

Fast92RS 03-05-2007 03:17 PM

Cop was probably in a bad mood or was bored lol

GP99GT 03-05-2007 03:19 PM

thats pretty retarded to give a ticket for it, but it is still kinda unsafe

That's Long Valley area cops in a nutshell. Bored, and sometimes compounded with bad moods.

and how is it unsafe if nobody is coming close? She slowed down, but nobody was coming anywhere near the driveway, so she went.

GP99GT 03-05-2007 03:36 PM

its the same as rolling through a stop sign just cause you dont see anybody.

You don't have a stop sign at the end of your driveway ;)
And I, for one, know that they never preached such a thing in driver's ed or anywhere else for that matter.

If he wants to fight the ticket that's what he can say. Look for it in the NJ driver's manual.

Well, technically you should have used "her driveway", not "their driveway".

Firebird67dude 03-05-2007 04:22 PM

Did she use a directional when she made the turn out of her driveway? Technicly one is supposed to use a "blinker" for any type of turn. Coming to anytype of uncontrolled intersection one is supposed to make a full stop and see if anybody is coming unless otherwise posted.

Yeah it sounds dumb, it is pretty mean but all in all he was just doing his job. And oviously the police officer was in some tyupe of close proximity to where your friend exited her driveway inorder for him to issue the summons.

Yeah she used a blinker. He was off to the side of the road clocking people. Car wasn't even on.

And WildBilly.....i said "her" and "she" later on. so there. :)

firehawk1120 03-05-2007 05:35 PM

typical

Mike 03-05-2007 06:40 PM

you have to stop whenever entering a roadway or normal traffic pattern....some parking lots and drive throughs dont have stop signs and you still supposed to stop.....

Teds89IROC 03-05-2007 09:57 PM

I think the only time you don't have to stop is if you there are no stop signs posted and you are entering private property, like what Mike said because malls and big parking lots are often regulated by traffic laws.

39:4–128.1 Improper passing of school bus 5 points...

Erra, ...read that one again boys. Thats a 5 pointer for a school bus. I would know...I drive one.

I would love to be the person to hand out the tickets for them too. I get at least 5 people a day that run my lights.

WHAT! Your town must be in some major need of funds.
If it wasnt a moving violation, Id even be more pissed. It would cost you more to go to court to fight it then just pay the ticket, which is what they just want you to do anyway.
