So how much is the !AC mod worth?

I started getting a serious screech/squeal noise from the engine and I thought it might be the tensioner or idler pulley. I just replaced the serpentine belt last week so I know that wasn't it. So last night I checked out the tensioner and that was fine so I removed the AC belt and it went away. The compressor seems to be fine and the AC idler pulley spins nice but the AC tensioner seems to be rough. So until I can get a new belt to see if that's it, I'm without AC which is fine since I don't use it anyway. It feels like I picked up at least 1-2 hp!

Demonicbird00 03-19-2007 05:32 PM

its about 35lbs, the compressor, condensor, lines, and brackets

well worth it IMO.

lol jeff dont care bout weight that much :P but he doesnt use it to save energy :P.... but then again i think i used my ac 3 or 4 times last year and 2 times were cuz i got sick of my girl complaining

curt86iroc 03-19-2007 06:07 PM

i ripped the a/c system out of my old 86 iroc to clear my intake. didnt really notice anything besides a cleaner looking engine bay.

DieselKickYoAss4Sure 03-19-2007 06:10 PM

keep it man ac doesn't decrease fuel mileage at all! just fix the ac the way its supposed to be fixed instead of hacking up the car, i guess jsut leve the belt off but dont take the compressor out for when and if you go to sell the car!

WayFast84 03-19-2007 06:13 PM

ac on a daily driver is a must!!! :) i hope my hayunday will have it!

GP99GT 03-19-2007 06:20 PM

a/c is unnecessary with t-tops or a vert...and i got by in my GP with no a/c with just 2 windows. its weaksuace to use a/c

ar0ck 03-19-2007 06:21 PM

A/C is useless in F-bodies, the blowers are horrible and never work when you need them! I ditched mine and haven't looked back. It was a lot cheaper then getting the whole system re-done since mine leaked.

DieselKickYoAss4Sure 03-19-2007 06:27 PM

ive cruised in plenty of f bodys and i thought the ac blowers worked fine! I can justify tearing out a leaky ac system because of the cost. but if you jsut need a new tensioner why get rid of it, not fixing soemthing as simple as that because you think spinning a pully is going to cost you 2 hp is not the way to go!

thats just my opinion
phil

JL8Jeff 03-19-2007 06:44 PM

I'm not tearing it out, I'm just not gonna put the belt back on any time soon.

DieselKickYoAss4Sure 03-19-2007 06:50 PM

yeah i knwo you dont wanna tear it out because you dotn do those types of things. :) i was jsut saying tearing it out for something such as a bad tensioner is stupid, and well, fixing the tensioner isnt hard either, so i dunno i jsut figure If you can make it work, make it work.:cold:

tell yourself that when it's 100* out and your car has been sitting in the sun for a good long while. you won't want to even attempt to take your t-tops off. i tortured myself several times attempting this over the past couple summers. it cooks your hands good.

A/C FTW

then again, my car is black interior (leather) and exterior, so it probably heats up a good bit more than most.

ar0ck 03-19-2007 08:45 PM

tint the windows & put in a windshield shade!

JL8Jeff 03-19-2007 08:56 PM

Windshield shade is a must to save the interior from sun damage no matter what time of the year. Cloth interior rules! I learned years ago when I had my first car, a 1969 Camaro conv with black vinyl interior. Never leave the top down on a sunny day or bring an extra layer of skin for the back of your legs! :moon:

transamkid 03-19-2007 09:34 PM

im having the a/c taken out of my car, i figured its a 1980 and what the hell who ever bought my car got power windows as an option, so im using them and right foot for my new a/c

BonzoHansen 03-19-2007 09:37 PM

pulling the AC is the easy way out. Pansies. :)

Savage_Messiah 03-19-2007 10:41 PM

My A/c blew stong and cold to the point that I never had it full blast. But I rarely used it since I've got t-tops.... 1 year + without it and there was maybe 1 or 2 days that I wished I had it. Worth it.

qwikz28 03-19-2007 10:44 PM

since its still charged i'm leaving mine in until it gets in the way of the cam install. once it gets discharged or if i realize i rarely use it, out it goes!

btw- on an ls1, its about 60 pounds supposedly. i know brandon said 35 but i believe its more actually

well... he kinda took hsi out so should know.... but then again i dunno how much r134a weighs. 35 is about right for the system's dry weight I'd imagine.

IdriveaSh*tbox 03-19-2007 11:08 PM

AC is the most useless option in any muscle car. When your cruising in the summer, windows and t-tops(if you gottem) should be down and off. :w00t:

Smash your modem please

ar0ck 03-19-2007 11:54 PM

Whats wrong with wanting AC in a Daily? The AC in the S10 blows as cold as winter, and it'll be perfect when I switch up driving once & a while.

79CamaroDiva 03-20-2007 01:12 AM

ac in my jeep is ice cold and absolute necessity w/o power windows... we'll see how the summer goes in my z28.. but i've survived all this time w/o a/c in my 79.. i just like the feeling of stepping out of the sun for a minute and sitting in cold air if im outside all day.. dont necessarily need it for a whole drive, just the first few minutes that im in the car.
