oil change

what kind of oil, how many quarts, and what filter should i use for an lq4 block ls1 car?

if its in an ls1 f body, it depends what oil pan you are running. i assume you still have a stock f body pan to have it fit the chassis. so therefore its still the same oil requirements and filter the car would have had stock. 5qts, and factory size filter. if its a different pan, then you have to see what that calls for.

and when it comes down to oil and filter name...
everyone has their own opinion..

for my 92z iv been using penzoil high millage but i havent been too happy with it, i highly reccommend against using quaker state because iv had nothing but trouble with it in the past, but if you can afford it, spend the extra bux and get mobile 1, thats what we use in the other cars and the harley, the stuff works really good!
just my :2cents:

sorry but how does one have trouble with a motor oil?

Iroc-z86 03-31-2007 10:03 PM

i would have to agree with chevylover5, quaker sucks. its all gunky and just disgusting after the oil change. I use mobile 1 synthetic in my camaro, the engine was built with it so if i changed it would probably blow up lol. I also use Castrol gtx high mileage in my dd, cavalier 3.1, with over 140,000miles and i havent had a problem; i replace one of the quarts with lucas or duralube engine treatment to quiet the valves, damn 3.1's are noisy.

put it this way, we put it in and it started tapping like a mo, the second we changed it, the tapping stopped. thats how we have problems with it...

I use Mobil 1, takes 5 1/2 quarts I think.. I never change it myself. For 10 extra dollars its worth having my shop do it.

German Castrol 0w30 is the best for an LS1. hard to find, but the best, hands down. dont use M1 5w30, its too thin, almost a 20 weight. LS1s like a thicker 30 weight, and GC is on the thick end of a 30. second choice would be M1 0w40.

Does anyone else use Royal Purple?
