high pitched whirring noise
 
lately i have been noticing a high pitched whirring noise that only occurs every once in a while. any ideas? its a 95 camaro 3.4l.

probably the rear, or it could be the center support bearing, or it could be in the trans, I would have to check it out for myself to be sure..

its coming from the engine... and it only does it at idle and even then its not constant

does it sound like a belt? could be a bad pully...

i was thinking it might be the tensioner

If it is not a cracked or heat damaged belt, then yes, it could be a bad tensioner or idler. Fire up the car and see if you can isolate the noise. Spray a little WD-40 on the tensioner or idler bolt and see if it goes away. Then replace that part. Try to avoid spraying WD-40 on the belt.

trying to diagnose sounds without the car present is next to impossible. Try to get the car to someone to get a better idea, or else you will just be throwing parts at the wrong problem.
