Pet Food tainted on purpose?

Imported ingredients used in recalled pet food may have been intentionally spiked with an industrial chemical to boost their apparent protein content, federal officials said Thursday.

That's one theory being pursued by the Food and Drug Administration as it investigates how the chemical, melamine, contaminated at least two ingredients used to make more than 100 brands of dog and cat foods.

That's such a shame. And what a coincidence that the chinese are holding up the visas of the FDA inspectors that want to go over there and inspect the factories  What's even more of a shame is that these ingredients don't belong in dog or cat food anyway because their digestive systems cannot process proteins from grains.

I've been feeding my 2 boxers a biologically appropriate raw diet for over a year now, and would never go back to a commercial diet. Their teeth are sparkling white, their coats are shiney and soft, even better yet, their poops are about 1/8 of that of a kibble fed dog. If anyone's interested, the following links are a good starting point to learn about it. If you do consider it, be sure to do your research first before you start, and be comfortable in doing so.

slugger that seems to be a bit weird.... what your dogs gunna do when you take um for a walk and they see food lol....

slugger27nj 04-20-2007 01:31 PM

Well, they eat mainly chicken, turkey, pork and various beef parts, and we don't see many of those on our walks :-P

We tried to switch my dog to a raw diet at the suggestion of our vet. This was after we found out he was allergic to beef.

Mom caved when he didn't take to it in a few days though - she couldn't stand to see him begging for food.

That's actually pleasantly surprising that your vet recommended it because from what I understand, a lot of tradtitional vets are misinformed about it. Did you try anything else beside beef?

We didn't try raw beef at all - he is allergic to it. Once we realized that he had a reaction anytime he ate anything with beef in it, the vet suggested the raw diet. We tried chicken, turkey, pork...and I think deer. He'll sit and beg for cooked versions of any of the above (thanks to my dad ), but he wasn't interested in the raw at all.

same here, my dog will eat cooked meats but isn't a fan of anything raw
we've gotten the bones straight from the butcher with the marrow and what not but my dog seems to prefer the bones my neighbor's dog had already stripped of everything
