Trans Swap

Thinking about doing it myself rather than have someone else do it. Has anyone ever done a swap? I just wanna know what I have to take out (transmission obviously, I know there's gonna be smart asses) , or advice. I don't wanna pull stuff off that I don't have to. Thanks =)

gotta remove the driveshaft, torque arm, trans crossmember, (insert random automatic-specific crap here like cables and whatnot...i know manual transmissions not autos).

hardest part will be unbolting the tranny from the block and you'll need a nice 3 foot extension

SupermanX24 04-25-2007 06:23 PM

Yeah, I was under the car earlier, not quite sure how i'm gonna get to the top bolts.

if you unbolt the tranny crossmember and let the motor rock backwards you may have enough clearance to get to em

bobb1589 04-25-2007 08:47 PM

what year car?... the tranny bolts shouldnt be TOO hard... i just did one on a second gen this weekend

MASSIVE difference between clearance to unbolt **** between a 2nd and fourth gen

bobb1589 04-25-2007 09:04 PM

is there? i havent really looked at mine haha...

top bell housing bolts are the main concern here. Some poeple say you can get them from the top (I call BS on that one), others say from below with the crossmember still on, others say crossmember off and rock it back.

If you're taking it off a parts car though, sawzall FTW...

if this wont work...

then to get to this point...

resort to this...

and then get this!!!

the two are not interchangeable

V 04-26-2007 04:16 PM

even the ls1 vs lt1 t56 themselves are different.
you cannot use an ls1 trans in a lt1 bellhousing.

SupermanX24 04-26-2007 05:19 PM

so the bellhousing is different...great.

SupermanX24 04-26-2007 05:22 PM

wait, I just thought about this a little more, are you saying the transmission I already bought (4l60e from a 99 camaro) won't work? lol, damn am I screwed...

bobb1589 04-26-2007 05:49 PM

no cant you just do something with the bellhousing?

with a manual transmission you can run an aftermarket bellhousing with an ls1 t56 and it will work on an lt1...in the case of the automatics he's screwed

yeah I got the money back. Do any other transmissions fit on my car besides the 4l60e?

you could get a 700r-4 to fit(same as thirdgen transmissions) but the pcm would probably s*** itself, meaning you'd need to spend another 200 to get the pcm to leave its s*** in the diaper, at which point you should have just bought a CPT rebuilt 4l60e

Tru2Chevy 04-27-2007 02:27 PM

Just the 4L60e (from another F-body) or the T56. A 700R4/4L60 would also fit, but they are not electronically controlled, and you would most likely have to swap your computer for one from an M6 car so it doesn't freak out. I could be wrong about that though.

SupermanX24 04-27-2007 05:10 PM

so what is you suggest I do? And did you get my donation, Justin?

j0n 04-27-2007 09:23 PM

my suggestion is get the tranny rebuilt at a reputable shop, or get a CPT tranny, install it, and send your core back after you get it out

Yes I did, thanx :)

And I'm with j0n. Best bet is the just get the trans rebuilt, or buy a rebuilt and turn yours in for a core.

SupermanX24 05-01-2007 06:34 PM

The guy I was gonna buy the transmission from said for me to look for an M30 on the casing, if it does it should fit. I do have an M30 on there, but you guys said it doesn't fit. What exactly is the "M30?"

I have no clue, but if it was previously bolted to an ls1 and worked while bolted to said ls1...it will not work on your car
