Trans Swap
Thinking about doing it myself rather than have someone else do it. Has anyone ever done a swap? I just wanna know what I have to take out (transmission obviously, I know there's gonna be smart asses) , or advice. I don't wanna pull stuff off that I don't have to. Thanks =)

gotta remove the driveshaft, torque arm, trans crossmember, (insert random automatic-specific crap here like cables and whatnot...i know manual transmissions not autos).
hardest part will be unbolting the tranny from the block and you'll need a nice 3 foot extension |
Yeah, I was under the car earlier, not quite sure how i'm gonna get to the top bolts.

top bell housing bolts are the main concern here. Some poeple say you can get them from the top (I call BS on that one), others say from below with the crossmember still on, others say crossmember off and rock it back.
If you're taking it off a parts car though, sawzall FTW... if this wont work... http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y17...removal007.jpg then to get to this point... http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y17...removal019.jpg resort to this... http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y17...removal009.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y17...removal013.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y17...removal011.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y17...removal016.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y17...removal025.jpg and then get this!!! http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y17...removal017.jpg |
any difference in the bellhousing if the trans is coming from an LS1 to an LT1?

even the ls1 vs lt1 t56 themselves are different.
you cannot use an ls1 trans in a lt1 bellhousing. |
so the bellhousing is different...great.
|
wait, I just thought about this a little more, are you saying the transmission I already bought (4l60e from a 99 camaro) won't work? lol, damn am I screwed...
|
no cant you just do something with the bellhousing?

Just the 4L60e (from another F-body) or the T56. A 700R4/4L60 would also fit, but they are not electronically controlled, and you would most likely have to swap your computer for one from an M6 car so it doesn't freak out. I could be wrong about that though.

so what is you suggest I do? And did you get my donation, Justin?
|
my suggestion is get the tranny rebuilt at a reputable shop, or get a CPT tranny, install it, and send your core back after you get it out

And I'm with j0n. Best bet is the just get the trans rebuilt, or buy a rebuilt and turn yours in for a core. - Justin |

The guy I was gonna buy the transmission from said for me to look for an M30 on the casing, if it does it should fit. I do have an M30 on there, but you guys said it doesn't fit. What exactly is the "M30?"
