OBDI tuning

Anyone in the central area do any OBDI tuning? I have a 91 trans am and I dont really know what I am doing tuning wise. Car runs really rich and I would like it to run a little better. I am just looking for some help pointing me in the right direction, not looking for a handout.

Have you checked out the tuning board over at thirdgen.org?

OBD1 is a non-tunable system unfortunately. There are, however, replacement chips that can be used, such as Jet and theres a few others.

my OBD I is tuned.

bubba428 06-29-2007 09:48 AM

you probably have a replacement chip in it to allow for that

BonzoHansen 06-29-2007 10:16 AM

Bubs, that is what tuning an OBDI is, chips. It is just a different way to the same means as a later flashable one. They just aren't flashable.

bubba428 06-29-2007 10:21 AM

well most OBD1 systems don't have a chip in the 1st place. but if you read my 1st post you'll see thats EXACTLY what I said. the 1st part is basically saying you can't just plug in and program like a OBD2 system. Then I point out that you can tune through the use of replacement chips. I don't think you understood exactly what I meant.

I actually came from Thirdgen.org originally. The people on the DIY board are sometimes a little arrogant/not friendly/advanced tuners. I have asked questions there before and gotten zero replies for simple questions where I have been confused.
OBDI IS tunable with the proper equipment, which I have, but in the end it does come down to a "chip". There have been a lot of advancements on the GM OBDI stuff if you really get hardcore into it, I have an Autoprom so I can do real time tuning.
I was just wondering if anyone here already does it on the 3rd gens. I have asked for personal help on the DIY and got a lot of s*** for it.

HardcoreZ28 06-29-2007 02:31 PM

Yeah the Autoprom allows for real time tuning and is a sweet tool for OBD I. There is a guy I deal with local who I don't think would have a problem helping you out but I'd have to check with him first. Shoot me a PM with your e-mail address and I'll forward it along to him. He did leave today for a 2 week vacation in NH however so it's gonna be a bit.

I have the autoprom as that I brought in a full kit from moates. Its nice but does take alot of time wnd reading to learn how to tune. I use tuner pro. I still have a lot to learn. Hey Paul can you see if your guy can give me a hand as well. When I get my 383 in. Im gonna need some help getting an intial tune to get the car running.

There are some obd1 tuners out there, but they are few & far between now. You don't need to go through Jet or hypertech for chips either. You can burn your own for VERY LITTLE cash outlay. And there are some neat things out there like real time tuning & such, again offered for very little $.

bubba428 07-03-2007 12:03 PM

well I do know that there were a few for early V8 4th gens but the 3.4 V6 is a performance waist land.

Again, almost any chipped gm car has a solution ie 82-93....the 94-95's are weird in that they are flash chips, but it goes through the obd1 port, many of which use an obd2 port. Like I said, odd. I love my good ole OBD2 stuff ;)

bubba428 07-03-2007 03:24 PM

well mine has an obd1 port not the freak obd2 ported obd1

PolarBear 08-08-2007 04:39 PM

Hardcore, Did you talk to your guy about the tuning? I dont even drive the car because it runs so rich
