Did you know... lugnuts are important
haha... for some strange reason. the lugs on my truck love to loosen up by themselves. i know the issue and its being resolved now, but its a tad too late... lol.
no serious damage was done, i didnt loose a wheel or anything,... barely. :-D I got home today from buying ice, and heard an odd knocking sound. ive been hearing a weird sound for a few weeks now, never thought much of it. well, i decided to pull the center caps to see if anythign was up. I swore the noise was coming from my drivers front, so i pulled that one, nothing, pulled the drivers rear cap, and metal shavings fell out...uh oh, very bad sign. then 2 lug nuts tumbled out, with half the studs still in them, lmao. the other 4 lugnuts were half off if not almost all the way off, and the wheel was sitting off center. the holes in the rim were ovaled out a little too...my bad. i managed to tighted 3 of the remaining 4 lugs, wasnt easy cuz the threads were trashed and moved the truck into my driveway. I proceeded to knock out all 6 studs and tomorrow i will get new ones. but once i had the drum off, i noticed my axle seal is leaking... soooo, tomorrow ill also be pulling the diff cover and popping the axle out so i can change the seal. fun fun if i may say so myself. And all the lugs will be getting replaced as well.... i almost wish i lost a wheel and totalled the truck, then insurance would pay for it and i wouldnt have to think about it anymore. |
im guessing its a gmc yukon. i just recently had that problem but 5 of the lugs came loose and fell off and then the 6th snapped off and we lost a wheel on 287. its because of the alloy rims. they all loosen. u can drive 5 miles and then turn them atleast half a turn again. its rediculous.

yeah, problem was i am using the lugs from my old 20's. When i sold them i threw in the stock lugs since they fit fine. now the stock wheels dont like these, so im buying 24 replacement lugs now, oem size and all.
I just can't wait till i get that stupid 10 bolt out from under the and get the 14 bolt in. |

mike, correct, my other cars have alloys and its not an issue.
redneck.. what i believe it has to do with is the shoulder size of the lugnut and more of that. contact area basically. the lugs i have now are designed a little differently so when they are as tight as possible, theres not much surface area holding the wheel and vibrations can spin them easily. At least thats along the lines of what i learned way back when i was into rims on my caddy STS. i'll see if i can take pics and post em up to show the differences. |
OEM lug is on the LEFT, the old one for my 20s is on the RIGHT

A buddy of mine boughta 90's VW golf from some guy...this thing had a soup can muffler and everything haha...but anyway he was driving down the highway and the one rear wheel came completely off and the tire landed in some guys front yard haha....apparently the previous owner bought new lugs with studs that were way to short

that happened on my 91 blazer once....but it was cause the air gun at school was effed up and wasnt tightening them enough...came loose after about a week, starting making a terrible knocking sound when i let off the gas
