Anybody ever see a sidepost battery do this?

I was getting ready to head out to play volleyball after work and the gauges jumped around with a weird noise but no crank over to the engine. So I popped the hood and started to check the battery and cables and the positive cable just popped right out of the battery! It looks like it was rusting from the inside out and caused higher resistance which melted the connecter. The positive cable looks like it took a couple of high resistance shots and started to melt the casing so I'll need to replace that as well and it doesn't look like a cheap cable. Luckily the 70 had a sidepost battery in it so I swapped it out and was up and running. I'm just glad this happened at home and not at the beach!

quite a bit

What a lousy design that could lead to an electrical fire easily. Like I said, I'm lucky it came loose at home.

happened to me when i bought my 2000 z28, had to get a new battery, and a new pair of shorts after it got all over me

every single acdelco battery does that when i was working doing triple A road side repair i worked in the battery truck most days and 99% of the calls were acdelco batterys with that exact problem

bad64chevelle 07-10-2007 11:40 PM

Yup same here

98tadriver 07-11-2007 12:20 AM

sweeeeeeeeeettttttt! did you touch it to see if it was acid coming out of there?

i hate sidepost batteries....******** pieces of garbage

GP99GT 07-11-2007 05:16 AM

dont buy another delco ;)

JL8Jeff 07-11-2007 07:27 AM

Hmmm, do any of the other brand batteries do the same thing? I'm not spending money on AC Delco for something that could cause big problems.

maroman88 07-11-2007 08:24 AM

never had a problem like that, all my 3rd gens have been sidepost no-name batteries lol no acdelcos tho

as long as you dont buy ac-delco your good to go

BonzoHansen 07-11-2007 09:04 AM

Yes, the OE delco in my Olds did the same thing. Too bad, their batteries are generally very good, but I have heard this about delco sideposts many times. I would not buy a s/p Delco, but I would buy a top post.

Fast92RS 07-11-2007 09:43 AM

I had that happen with a delco battery and a no name battery. The no name battery froze to the ground cable and I had to replace the ground cable and the battery.

i run interstates, never had any issues

SamhainZ28 07-11-2007 11:48 AM

optima batteries are where its at

Rich189 07-11-2007 12:42 PM

i run an optima red top

camaro2you 07-11-2007 04:06 PM

ive never had or seen a delco do that.

DieselKickYoAss4Sure 07-11-2007 04:17 PM

yup Ive seen it many times, =there are only a few battery manufacturers in the country, ac delco just puts their name on one of them, interstate has the same amount of problems as the rest of them. optima is by far the best type battery but, there are other gel cell batteries out there that are the same thing and last just as long as the optima but not the name!

Blacdout96 07-14-2007 05:01 PM

I had an optima red top too, best thing i ever bought for my car, also saved the car in the accident, it took the majority of the blow.

other than having batteries go dead, i've never had any issue with them, and certainly nothing like that. that's crazy.

I thought you bought too big of a battery and just smushed it in!

foff667 07-16-2007 10:55 AM

I've had several sideposts without that issue
