A BIG F U goes out to...

NJDMV!!!!!

The wifey took my Trans Am to inspection today.

They failed it because of "modified exhaust/ too loud."

That is ******* ********!!!!!

Loudmouth cat back is completely legal.

F U NJ DMV!!!!!

So..... anyone know where I can go for inspection? It passes emissions..... and retains ALL emissions related parts. It just has a cat back on it.

ShitOnWheels 08-29-2007 09:27 AM

I even did the low cut shirt and got an older gentleman (nice guy, 40s or 50s). He revved it a lot...figured he enjoyed the car. Then I get "Failed for Modified Exhaust and too loud." But then he says (different guy) that it shouldn't have failed for too loud, but it is still modified.

But it passed emissions with flying colors since all they do now is the OBD test. Oh well.

ar0ck 08-29-2007 09:29 AM

Which station did you take it too? I would try another station.

Wayne.

But the rejection already says modified/loud exhaust. They're gonna see no changes and still fail it.

ar0ck 08-29-2007 09:32 AM

I would just rip that failed sticker off and try again in another town.

Either that or just pay the $60-$80 & take it to a private place and pass legitimately.

maroman88 08-29-2007 09:40 AM

since when is it illegal to modify your exhaust?

its still in the computer system, dontcha love technology?

ar0ck 08-29-2007 09:43 AM

bah screw that crap. Call SLP maybe get some sort of documentation saying the LM is a legit exhaust?

Knipps 08-29-2007 09:46 AM

i have a few things i'll fail for so i can't have it inspected before i go to school
now my dad's going to be an *** and take it off insurance out of paranoia :-x

(i still think it's retarded we can't say azz, they can say it on cable so it's not saving anyone from being exposed to it)

When I ordered my Loud Mouth 2, I asked SLP if they ever had any complaints from customers about it not passing inspection. They said no, but that they've gotten many for the regular Loud Mouth.

jims69camaro 08-29-2007 10:29 AM

get documentation from SLP. go to regional DMV center (eatontown, trenton, deptford), show docs to person at desk, ask where to go in order to get your "LEGAL" exhaust system passed. they should be able to handle everything for you right there, including a new inspection sticker.

slugger27nj 08-29-2007 10:42 AM

That is crap! The person that made this decision was just being a *******. My LM1 has passed 3 times at the Freehold Insp. Station. Actually just went through at the end of July with no problems. It's really sad, but most the people that work at these stations don't have a clue about cars to begin with.

slugger27nj 08-29-2007 10:54 AM

Click this link to SLP's site:
http://www.slponline.com/view_product.asp?P=31042A

Then click on "instructions" on the side bar to the left. The 3rd page of this PDF explains the design and legality of the system. The following statement is included:
Quote:

Only actual laboratory decibel measurements are a fair measurement of a muffler’s effectiveness to quiet exhaust and should be required and completed to judge an exhaust system. Most jurisdictions do not have the ability to measure noise levels accurately. The testing is very subjective if not properly and accurately completed.

NJSPEEDER 08-29-2007 02:33 PM

if you have the DOT sticker and information you can go back to them about it. you can also point out that "too loud" is not a subjective standard that they can jsut raise whenever they want.
"too loud" is legally defined as 90db under partial load in an open area. there is a proper test procedure for it an everything.
if you don't have the DOT docs adn sticker anymore, jsut call SLP, i am sure they will be happy to provide them.

Savage_Messiah 08-29-2007 02:36 PM

I failed multiple times for my magnaflow.

That last quote is fairy tale, nice to believe but not true... I called to *****, and was told that "the exhaust being too loud is up to the inspector's discretion"

I just kept going to different ones... ridgewood turned me down even with the paperwork from Magnaflow... finally I got some kid at one of the stations, aid to him "hereI failed before, they told me to come back with this paperwork and I'd be fine," showed him the paperwork and passed.

edit: Tim, show me the law wwhere it says 90 dB.... cuz I had my town's cops pouring over every single book to find a legal limit, and they found nothing

Noodles 08-29-2007 02:51 PM

no im pretty sure that even on stock cats, if its too loud its too loud.. there is a decibel limit..

the federal highway limit, which is the guideline used in new jersey, is 90db. trust me, it is way louder than you think and not up to subjective enforcement.
foff667 will remember this one. my 1991 Camaro RS, LO3, headers, !cat, and borla with the open plate. i picked up the same sound pressure meter that the NHRA uses to enforce their db limit only to find out that doing the test completely wrong i couldn't get my car over the limit. holding the meter about 6 inches from the tail pipe and rev'ing to to 5k barely hit 80db.

kasey, i will find the law and get you a copy. it is a fun weapon to have when power trip nitwits try to bust you. i can't tell you the number fo times i got uled over for noise. best part is, i didn't ever get asked a single time about the slicks adn skinnies i drove around on for 2 years. lol

I really don't understand how they can measure the db of an exhaust system in an open cinderblock building; it's like a long tunnel! "Hello...hellooo! Echo...echooo!" They should take it outside to do the volume check. Pure BS, IMO. You might have to try a local shop and pay the $$.

Send to me as well please. If I can get the SLP docs and that I'll take it back and say "Ha, you suck, pass me now." :)

Exactly. Any car is gonna sound loud in there. The ford heavy duty truck sounded about as loud as the TA. But whatever. What can ya do.

Predator86 08-29-2007 05:59 PM

I always get inspected at a shop...i goto johnny jem in middlesex by piscataway...it cost 60 p[lus buck but he always passes me

and as far as sound goes...my neighbor could wake up a dinosaur with his forumula and he goes to the same shop i do and has never failed

bubba428 08-29-2007 08:18 PM

^ lmfao. i got pulled over and the cop actually asked me what was wrong with my exhaust once, ive got hooker headers, high flow cat and a flowmaster 80series. also when i got my truck inspected in april/may, they had the shop door closed, and the guy who ive taken my stuff to for 2 years actually had the balls to tell me my truck was too loud, its only got a flowmaster on there lol

qwikz28 08-30-2007 10:56 PM

you know, this always killed me. my neighbor has a 1600cc bike thats louder than kasey is short... yet they hassle us for a catback. even my moms car is damn loud. the law is waaaay too lopsided
