Damn v8's and exhaust

So, the beater has been running pig rich.

2 of the O2 sensors have crapped out - back ones.

I picked up all new ones and figured it would be not so bad to change them.... WRONG!

I've tried penetrating lube, breaker bars etc and no luck. Completely rusted on there!!!! Does not budge!! Hell, one of the O2 sensors are mounted in the exhast where there is no way in hell I would ever be able to get an O2 sensor socket on it.

So.... now I contemplate replacing the manifolds and stock y pipe with headers and a catted y pipe. I really did not want to do that.... but it might be easier to replace the pipes than O2 sensors.

Sigh..... and I have no money for this.... grrrrrrr I guess I gotta do some more research.... maybe pacesetter??

Grrrrrr, my v6 was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much easier!!!!

maroman88 09-20-2007 12:27 PM

hehe ive tried all that and cant get the O2 sensor out of the 91

BonzoHansen 09-20-2007 12:42 PM

Soak them in PB blaster. You might need to hit them with heat.

ar0ck 09-20-2007 01:05 PM

You can pick up a set of coated Pace-setters with a Y-pipe through summit for a pretty good deal. It wouldn't hurt to at least price shopping. I had the same problem when i was doing headers I tried to salvage the 02 sensors but they wouldn't budge so I ended up buying new OEM GM ones and they work great.

I have a can of PB Blaster if you want to try that.

Firebird67dude 09-20-2007 02:10 PM

Back o2s? I only have two right on the collector of the headers. Dumb newer LT1s with more than two o2s. Waste of time!!!

NightRydaSS 09-20-2007 02:12 PM

have you tried yelling at them and making threats??? :soapbox:

all obd2 cars have post-cat sensors to set a check engine light if the cats arent working properly - james, your problem is NOT the rear O2's.

Tru2Chevy 09-21-2007 12:35 PM

Yea, bad rear O2s wouldn't cause a rich condition - just a check engine light to tell you that the cat's aren't working (or that the O2s are dead).

Complain all you want, but OBDII allows you to pass emission's testing without them ever taking a tailpipe reading! So don't P&M about 4 O2 sensors. Just get sims for the rear O2's and the computer will be happy. But my hippy squad will kick your arss for hurting the environment!

should have never left us 6ers behind lol

Chiming in really late on this thread but heat is the only way to get those puppy off. If you don't have a torch you need to get out on the road and then come back and then apply brute force.

I went with rear 02 sim's for now..... picked up 4 mpg.... mpg is still poor.

In April I want to get pacesetter headers, new cats, 02 sensors (have them now) n plugs :)

I just gotta be patient for now :(

maroman88 01-17-2008 07:29 PM

wat kinda mpg are you getting/wats driving style?

12secondv6 02-05-2008 08:51 PM

I average about 20-21 now with most of the miles done on the highway.

I bet if I just did highway only it might get to 22.... which is sad :(

Don't look at winter gas mileage and compare it to summer. I'm getting around 16-16.5 mpg daily driving with mostly 45 mph and under. During the summer I got 18-19 mpg daily driving and 23-24 highway. I need to get a tune since doing the headers, but winter conditions kill gas mileage no matter what you drive. My old 88 Toyota 4Runner got 20 mpg daily driving (24 highway) in the summer with the V6 and that would drop to 17 mpg in the winter.

98tadriver 02-07-2008 03:28 PM

bahhhhhhhhhh if u didnt wanna get headers, just weld a bung on there and put a new 02 sensor in its place :)
