Silly question about stock LT1 exhaust

So, I know my 96 T/A has 2 cats in the y pipe..... but I also noticed these huge resonator type/ catalytic converter shaped things in the exhaust manifolds.

WTF are they???

Don't tell me the car has 4 cats?!?!?!?!?!?

Please excuse my v8 ignorance

IN the manifolds? I've never seen those, now you have my curiosity piqued.

The LS1 car I just took apart had a flex pipe in the RH side right after the manifold - maybe that is what you are seeing? Dunno lt1 cars, just throwing this out there.

pre-cats? just a thought. I know what you're talking about, but I dont really know what they're called  real helpful, I know

The cats are part of the Y-pipe but the Driver's side is where it bolts to the manifold, basically under the brake boster, the pass side sits back, more down stream like a "normal Y-pipe set-up for a single cat car. Also on the pass side ( hard to discribe ) there is a odd joint/buldge near where the Y-pipe bolts to the manifold - Flex pipe thingy Bonzo is referring too.

The manifolds have tin heat sheilds on them? Could you be thinking that is some type of cat?

Man, I thought the LS1 y pipe was ugly. Yes, that is the same type of flex pipe in the LS1 pipe.
