the unemployed life (for a short while)
stay up till 4am, sleep till 12noon at the least, eat bean burritos from taco bell for breakfast, work on all my friends cars. and today- go out to garage, start up bike, put bike in gear and go to bank and deposit unemployment check :) 8-)

Free mechanic? I believe we could all find a job for you like that.

Ahhh... so you're one of the reasons I pay such high taxes.
Hmmm... :moon::twisted: |

if they offer classes, take them. justin's bro is a union carpenter and with all the classes he has taken it is rare that he is ever laid off for more than a week or two at a time.
|
ohhhhh that's so not fair lol
|
the introductory class is so painfully stupid it hurts. You sit there in this room and watch videos on how to apply for a job and crap. Plus its 4 hours long! And you sit in these old 1950s tiny elementary school seats. I think they try and intimidate you into getting a job doing ANYTHING just so you dont have to come back :lol:

Reminds me of the "laid off" odd todd cartoons http://www.oddtodd.com/cartoons.html

I was wondering what it's like to be unemployed. Not that I'm hoping it happens since I have a mortgage and 2 car loans to pay each month. My brother was working 3-4 part time jobs while trying to find a full time job. They all kept calling at the same time to see if he could work. I'm at 18+ years at my current job so any change could be painful!

the classes has nothing to do with being laid off or not when youre in a union. trust me. it all has to do with the job, the economy, the market, if the foreman like you, etc. its not what you know, its who you know. plus, Ron is still an apprentice, so there isnt much he can do about it. now is the slow time for everyone. i was out for 5 months 2yrs ago. from 2nd week in sept. till mid feb. luckily, im out of my time now, and times are amazingly good for fitters out of 274. you can pick and choose your job from 3 prospects the day you get laid off. collecting is great when its not for long, and if you dont have alot of bills. i have a big mortage, so if im laid off for a while, things might get tight. other then that......its a paid vacation. i was out for a month earlier this summer. i detailed every car i own, did the suspension and tires/rims on the 02, fixed up my new garage.

yep, you know what i mean. im in my last year of apprenticeship, the only classes ive ever taken since ive been in the union was for my apprenticeship. im not super tight with the BA, so sometimes i might not be employed 52 weeks out of the year, but i have a good rep in the union. hopefully i luck out again and work inside all winter like last year, for the most part. :) the only time i think i ever did those stupid classes was before i got into the carpenters union. and those unemployment classes do suck so bad |

Oh I know apprenticeship doesn't always keep you in work longer, but it has certainly helped my brother a few times. He's got 2.5 years in now, and I think the longest he has been out of work was 3-4 weeks (and the first part of that was an 8 day vacation).
He's in pretty good with a few local contractors, so he's stayed on jobs and gotten picked up for jobs that way. - Justin |
