Dumb question 5.7 Iroc

I have an 89 Iroc w/ a 5.7. The owner before put in a reman motor. When the motor was put in they also put headman headers on. When they did that they did rig job on the exhaust. So I decided to redo the exhaust system.
When I took off the driver side header the header bolt (2nd one from the firewall) started leaking coolant.
My question is, has anyone run by a problem like this andcan I put sealant on the header bolt.
Thanks
Keith

There should be no water coming out of the header bolt holes. You either have a cracked head or the bolt hole was drilled too far. You can use some permatex or something to seal it but the head really needs to be repaired or replaced to fix it right.

have had that happen also - all the early mopars the bolt holes went into the water jackets - from the factory they used studs instead of bolts and permetexed them in place -- i would try that if you can in fact get a 5 / 16 nut on and theirs room to tighten it - other wise empty the rad and glue them ( the hedders on ) and see what happens before you start yanking heads - jz

i'd say permatex it...thats what you do for head bolts that pass through water jackets

If you go this route, make sure you use the copper one....

aye, copper will stand up to the heat.

though, im pretty sure you shouldnt have ANY coolant in those bolt holes...

Thanks, all for the info and tips. I put in some work on the Iroc tonight
and I got the new headers on and the permatex on the bolt was a great
idea. You guys were talking about cooper. was that the gaskets you were
talking about (if it was those are the gaskets I used)
Thanks again.

We were talking about using the Copper Permatex, as opposed to the standard black or blue Permatex. Only the copper will stand up to the heat that exhaust generates....
