Yea, JeepForum.com is the best for all Jeeps.
On the rare chance that you can't find the info there about the Cherokee, check out www.naxja.com (North American XJ Association). XJ FTW! - Justin |
Check out the North Jersey Jeep Club (www.northjerseyjeepclub.org). It's a club that caters to all breeds of Jeep, but there are quite a few XJ owners that are members. You can join the forum for free, but if you go the extra mile and join ($40 a year), you can get into the Members Only section of the forum as well as attend monthly trail rides, social events, and as a bonus, you can attend Tech Days, where members help other members repair or upgrade their rigs. I guess it's kind of like here but with Jeeps.
I also happen to be a member. Great group of people. And Justin's also right, the NAXJA site is pretty durned good. |

I'm also on my second NP231 transfer case as well; once again, neglected maintenance. My front drive shaft was in bad need of grease and seized, and the pressure was enough to actually crack the T case. Replaced it and installed a J&B Conversions Super Shorty SYE and custom CV rear shaft. I'm kind of religious about maintenance after that experience, so it's also sporting all new tie rods and ends and a new (Used) steering gear box as the old one leaked like a sieve and left a nice coating of grime under the Jeep. I'm running a 1.75" Daystar coil spacer lift and a JKS 1.25" body and motor mount lift. Rolling on 33" BFG mud terrains (33 x 12.5 x 15) on black steel wagon wheels. Came from the factory with the Dana 30 front axle, which remains open, and the Dana 44 rear, which still contains the factory LSD. Bilstein shocks and Teraflex adjustable lower control arms on all four corners and Rubicon Express swaybar disconnects also. Nth Degree 'tummy tucker' skid plate and a Kilby gas tank skid plate as well as Warn diff guards for a little extra protection from the rocks. Body wise, I'm running home made front and rear bumpers and a tire carrier I liberated from a buddy's scrap pile and modified to suit my purposes (I love to weld, no matter how bad I am at it!). Also running some old nerf bars of unknown origin that were given to me, but I plan to replace them with a set of home made rocker guards. Also have an old Cobra 19 Plus CB mounted on the dash to keep up with the news out on the trails. Future upgrades will include only gears and lockers (4.27:1 with ARBs front and rear), a new stereo head unit and I'm DONE with this rig. I don't want a long arm lift or short arm kit as the height on this rig is perfect for me. It's a dual purpose rig that I drive to work several times a week (40 miles one way) and it works just how I want it to on the trails. Handles like a stocker on the street and crawls rocks like a champ off road. Yeah, yeah...this thread is useless without pics. |
Best info around:
Pirate4x4.com Search dont post theyre all dick *** hard core rock crawlers. Get some TSL's or boggers on that *****... Feel free to lock up that d30 front its a real good axle all the way up to 35's. As for the LSD in the read d44 I'd leave it to keep your streetability. No good plans for it like a 383/nv4500/205case, d60 front 14b FF rear and 44's :P ?????? |
Pirate has some good info, no doubt, but I wouldn't call it a go-to resource for XJs, like the OP asked for.
BTW, no need whatsoever for a 383 in a little Jeep. The 4.0 is plenty stout enough, and if it's not a 4.7 stroker with supporting mods will usually cost less than to build a sbc and swap it. - Justin |

The NEXT Jeep will be a trail only, lincoln-locked V8 powered monster. I begin building that one right after the Trans Am is done in 2034. |
Where up near Wantage do you go wheeling? My grandparents live in Wantage (farm at the corner of Rt. 565 and Beemer Church Rd.), and I didn't think there were any legal trails in the area....
- Justin |
They've got a nice farm there. I think that's where the real big farmhouse is by the road. Big porch. Sweet.
No legal trails in Wantage. Very few in NJ. I make the two hour trek to Joliet PA to wheel Rausch Creek. Used to go to Paragon also...before it closed. The club is actually seeking private land owners throughout the state to let us run legally on their property. |

Do you ever head south to wheel in the pines? - Justin |
Sorry, lost track of this one for a bit. I've wheeled the Pines a few times but to be honest it's not my cup of tea. More mud and water crossings than anything else there and I prefer rockcrawling and the occasional hill climbs.
I like Rausch a lot as there are plenty of trails for every difficulty level. |
