Vintage Le Mans footage.

Im a big enduracne racer fan, and wihtout a doubt the geatest racing era was the 60-70's. In this footage we have a GT40 take us around Le mans. This is not made in 1967 by the way,its made in 1969 wiht the two reasons why. they talk about the porsche 917, which didnt run there until 1969, and was so dangerous cause of areo problems and too much power in a light car ( the frame weighted an incredible 150 lbs!!!), and an unexperianced privateer that bought one was killed on the first lap, but thats in other footage. The other being the Ford chicanes were installed, which wasent until after 1967. Henry Ford payed the track handsomly to have them installed. Why? so they could keep their speed and lap record for all time after the 1967 Le Mans, which at that race, had anounce Ford had Retired from endurance racing....but was beaten in 1971 by a Porsche 917, which that still stands today!!! anywho, check out the guardrails on the long straight away....oh wait those are trees!!! yup racings come a long way, but man what I would do to of seen them dice it up back in the day. so enjoy everyone, ill post more later.

even better, a 956 going 246+mph driven by Derek Bell, who I met by the way, he's one of the coolest drivers Ive ever met. I asked him abouthow he got into racing, he said He was encouraged by his dad to start racing, so him and his friend bought a Lotus 7 and tuned it and raced it. They were good racers, but his friend got married and drop away from the team. Derek went on to drive other cars, and eventually was spotted and, well , here he is today!! He later went on that day to win the Race of champions presented by Toyota.

I still have it on tapefrom when It had its 30th anniversery on speedtv. Steve McQueens son narrorated between commercials about the film, as the comic book guy would say in the Simpsons, Best movie ever!! If you look real hard at the begining when they show people showing up at the track, in the traffic in the one scene, theres a FOrd GT40 MkIII, and I believe the one Camera car was as high as 4th at one time they said, even after the cars steve and them were driving broke, but they had to keep coming in during the race and change the film. I'd show you all some pictures of a certain person I know's collection of cars, but im not really allowed to due to it beign his private collection, tho I dont see how its private when hes in every other Issue of my vintage motorsports magazine. Il jsut drop a few names of cars he got, and maybe, just maybe, at the next meet ill bring some photo's if you guys are intrested. hes got.... Corvette GS ( 1963, yes he owns one of the five ever built!!) two GT40's including the only MkIIB ever made, which was a mock up of two crashed GT40's given a different serial number, the most winningest 1969 917LH ( before they went to the K configuration which oyu know them as today wiht the short tail) A couple 908's Targa form, America's first Ferrari, a 166, almost all the cunninghams, a Mercedez Benz W154:drool:, the last Martini Rossi 917 that raced   I love that car cause it was the last car I wanted to see that was on my list, so I completed one list of cars Ive always wanted to see, and...Porsches first factory made race car, also known as Chassis 550-01. The man is very nice, and knows his stuff. His workshop who he has a staff that maintains his cars, is soooo clean, NASA is jealous of how steril it is lol.

i have always heard that bell is a really down t earth guy. i think teh coolest drivers i have ever met were boris said and eddie hill(old school drag racer). said was really cool when my bro and i got to talk to him. it was the first year of the daytona prototypes and he called it a heap of ****. lol
it was also very cool to see him turn into instant coach when some kid that was driving on teh team got caught out in lapped traffic and wadded the car up bad. he jsut put his arm around the kid and started the whole "you got f'ed on that one. nothin' you could do about it" speech and started telling jokes to get the kid to cheer up. wish i coudl remember the name of the other driver, i am sure i can find him in the program from the race.
