cam question

Ok, I what to upgrade to a better cam. It is a stock 89 block 5.7.
But I need to stay with the stock heads for a year or so.
What would you recommend. Also how much more power will it add.
With the cam I also what to change runners, injectors, trottle bottle
and thinking about a NOS fogger plate 50-100 shot.
Thanks

i hear the LT4 cam is good for Gen 1 smallblocks, go with a wet shot if you do spray. not sure on power gains from cam tho, maybe 20rwhp? this is a bit out of my league lol

Do you know if you have cast aluminum or hypereutectic pistons?

keith2717 11-21-2007 03:54 PM

Not sure about the pistons it was a reman engine that the previous owner
had installed. I have to look in the paperwork I got with the care but im
sure it dosent have the break down of the engine just the intall bill.
How can I check besides ripping it apart to find out what pistons it has.

there is now way to check without removing the heads.. You will have to change the valve springs when you do the can swap. Also you will not get the results with the cam change without doing some head work. Your best bet is to to a complete top end work up if your bottom end truly is fresh and built right. That way everything will work together as a complete combo rather than a thrown together mess.

Good point Ill wait to do the cam until i do heads.

what is your budget to upgrade power right now? there are low cost cam options around and some free mods available for the L98 that can add up to very noticable gains.

if money is tight i would suggest planning your upgrades by starting with parts that will continue to pay dividends as your power levels go up. start with some suspension bolt ons and some good gears. you will drop more et with traction and gearing than any cam you can swap in.
