Jeep - 1, Hyundai - 0

So I've started to think that for some reason I wasn't meant to own a Jeep. Me + Jeep seems to equal accident. :(

At least this time I got a Jeep that was prepared

Road conditions:

Jeep damage:

Yes, I know the wheels are dirty....

Bumper seems to be bent right at the pocket for the winch

Plastic trim cracked/broken

Unharmed passenger side for comparison

Only the body damage was caused by me....

Now for the story....

This happened last night around midnight on the ramp leading from Rt. 1 south to I-95 south in Lawrenceville. It's a 2 lane exit, and the inside lane was all ice/slush, but you couldn't see it until you were right at the corner. So I get to the corner, see the ice/slush, and the Jeep immediately starts to fishtail. I work a bit to get it straightened out, but manage to do so without hitting anything. So I look up the ramp, and there is this Hyundai parked sideways in the lane that I am in with his flashers on. I start trying to change lanes and brake, but thanks to all the slush on the road, I didn't do much turning or slowing down. Fortunately the driver of the Hyundai saw me coming, so he had time to brace himself and he was ok.

Turns out he had done the same thing I did, only he managed to bend both driver's side wheels pretty good on the curb, and it also looked like he did some damage to the front suspension. He had already called the police for a tow and was sitting in the road waiting when I hit him.

The ramp is state police jurisdiction, but a Lawrence cop showed up first, and he had trouble stopping behind my Jeep too. He said he couldn't believe how slippery it was since all of the rest of the roads were clean and dry. He had set up a few flares, but while we were waiting there, a Ford Ranger came around the ramp, slid, bounced off to the outside curb and almost hit the cop car.

State police finally show up, take both of our statements, writes up the report, and waits for a tow truck to show up for the Hyundai. No tickets issued, so I'm kinda anxious to see how he wrote the report.

yeah on those rt1-95 exits they are doing that haggard ass road work, and all the tore up road surface and ground is creating their own little lakes that keep freezing over at night.

the road crews there are gonna get someone killed.

NJSPEEDER 12-18-2007 02:20 PM

Yes, last night on my way home from work. Only on the right lane of the exit onto 95 south though. Left lane was clear.

Yes, on my way home from work, just me and the other driver, and everyone is fine. I did cut my hand trying to clean up glass, but nothing major.

Yea, that's what I'm figuring that it is. When I came into work an hour ago I looked over and saw that they had that entire exit closed down. Not sure what they are doing, but hopefully they will even it out so there is no more ice formation.

Yea, the bumper saved me from totaling another Jeep. Had a had a nice bumper on the first one I would still be driving that.

Now I just have to figure out how to fix this bumper before the Jeep leaves the pavement again.....

SteveR 12-18-2007 04:29 PM

wow. his door looks like tin foil. Glad everyone was ok.

The Fixer 12-18-2007 04:43 PM

OUCH, but Jeep FTMFW! Glad you're OK, and hopefully the cops just wrote it up as no-fault due to weather, being that he almost crashed into you guys, and the truck the came around the ramp after him also took a beating. Good luck with fixing the bumper, post on JF to see if anyone there has suggestions on that. I'm sure the guys that wheel their trucks hard have probably bent one up like that before.

Yea, I'm gonna post up there tonight with the same story and ask about the bumper. It's fine for daily driving, but if I head off road and pull the disconnects on the front sway to let it flex, I might run into trouble.

JL8Jeff 12-18-2007 06:01 PM

Yeah, that construction right there is ridiculous and they waited until the busiest time of year to tear it all up. I got tossed around pretty good in the SS coming back from shopping over the weekend. I know exactly where the slush/ice probably was because of how they dug it up.

bad64chevelle 12-18-2007 06:40 PM

Damn! Thank god everyone was okay. Justin if you want to fix the front bumper let me know, Ive already fixed two front bumpers with the John Deere tractor, we can definitely do another one. The first was my sisters S10, then the other Justin's Jeep. Its just a tow chain and about half hour of work :-)

misterjuice 12-18-2007 06:55 PM

that looks like Genie's hyundai lol

I know, it even has a Rider sticker (albeit in a different location than on my car). I was a little freaked out at first, lol.

Sounds like a plan....we'll setup a time after the holidays when things aren't so crazy.

- Justin

bad64chevelle 12-18-2007 08:30 PM

Yeah definitely...which reminds me, I need to put a new injector pump on that tractor first.

foff667 12-18-2007 10:56 PM

glad your ok man, that hyundai looks damn close to totalled because of you so congrats :D

That construction is retarded, they even change how the exit is now as I missed my exit the other day because of it.

First response on JeepForum when I asked about the best way to get the bumper back in shape:
Quote:

It would probably be easiest to hit something with the other side of the bumper... maybe another disliked make of your choice? Glad everybody was ok. Im surprised that did that much damage to your jeep. Looks like a pretty solid bumper.
I also found out tonight that there was most likely a water main break at that exit sometime during the night. It was either partially or fully closed almost all day today (including rush hour), and at least a few local businesses were w/o water this morning.

I'm hoping there will be something in the paper about it (the possible water main issue) tomorrow, just so that there is more proof showing how bad that one particular section of road was.

Savage_Messiah 12-19-2007 03:18 AM

damn man, glad you're alright

qwikz28 12-19-2007 06:05 AM

good thing both you guys are alright... but i can't help but think how funny it would have been had you stormed out the car and ran up to the guy in the hyundai and just screamed out BOOOOOYAAAAA!!!!! right in his face.

its wayyy too early in the morning :(
