I thought alcohol wont freeze in the freezer?

I know beer or light alcohol drinks will freeze and explode, but i've always kept my hard alcohol in the freezer if i want it cold.. I just looked and I have some Captain Morgan Parrot Bay rum that partially froze in the middle.. wtf is up with that?? The regular Captain is still perfectly fine.. i guess that means whatevers left unfrozen is a bunch stronger than usual then...

wretched73 12-22-2007 09:36 PM

I would guess, we leave the hard stuff in my friends freezer for weeks and it has never frozen. And we have had Captain Morgan, Jack Daniels, SOCO, etc... and nothing froze

Maybe the Parrot Bay stuff has more water in it, and less alcohol compared to the regular Captain? That's the only thing I can think of.

Parrot Bay has a bunch of sweet fruity stuff that can freeze. I usually keep stuff like that in the fridge. I had a bottle of Aftershock blow up in my freezer once...

bubba428 12-22-2007 10:17 PM

DRINK THE UNFROZEN PART!!!!!! you made moonshine lol

parrot bay is only 40% alcohol I think. stuff thats 80% or higher wont freeze, unless it has a lot of sugar in it.

only thing i seen keep in the freezer is Polish Potato Vodka its a killer tho hahahahahahahahahahhahahahahah

I have a big bottle of Level Vodka(great stuff) in my freezer. As it started to run low it iced up a little.

That happened to a friend of mine- good story, too. She put the Aftershock in the freezer and it froze solid and then cracked a little on the countertop when she took it out. She didn't notice and walked away to get ready to go out and in the meantime it started running out on the floor. Not a big deal, until her pug Tucker smelled it and started licking it up. He started banging into walls and walking into things, so she came down to check it out and pretty much hit the roof. Tucker was rushed to the vet (who was thankfully right down the road and said he was fine) and when he came home he drank his entire dog bowl full of water and went to sleep.

40% is 80 proof, i think if you check if it's a flavored rum it about 60-64 proof

SteveR 12-23-2007 04:54 PM

It's yummy  tummy melts frozens.

i think alcohol freezes @ -114* f or something. the capt morgan original spiced rum is is 70 proof, and parrot bay is 40 proof. I like Rum as much as Capt Jack Sparrow does!

yeah, I was drunk when I posted that

I meant to say parrot bay is 40 proof and thats why it started to freeze. rum, whiskey and vodka are usually 80-100 proof so the more alcohol, the less likely it is to freeze. you'd be hard pressed to freeze everclear

that reminds me of a sad story. I had a friend that was stationed in Alaska and he told me one time one of the guys in his squad had a few drinks and took a bottle of vodka out with him on an ATV in the winter and he stopped by a lake and started drinking. They found his body two days later. Turns out, the vodka, since it doesnt freeze, was still in liquid form when he was drinking it, but because it was like -60*f outside, the vodka literally froze his internal organs after he drank it and he froze to death from the inside out.
