What the heck is this thing on my moms 97 blazer?

97 blazer, 4.3 vortech v6. On the throttlebody blade, riveted to it, looks like some kind of plastic wedge shaped restrictor.. I would think that its blocking so much airflow! can i remove it w/o affecting how it runs? i would have to fill in the holes where the rivets used to be. at idle with the tb blade closed, its not in the way but anytime the tb blade is open, it gets in the way.

i outlined it in red

I would take it out....doesn't look necessary

edpontiac91 12-24-2007 03:44 PM

If it's running OK, then LEAVE IT ALONE. Everything that is put on there is either for emissions or driveablity. Taking it out might just allow TOO MUCH airflow for certain types of throttle positions, such as WOT. Ask someone at a Chevrolet Dealership before you do something that will screw up the idle or affect gas mileage. Just my :2cents:

Good point. maybe i will. if it was mine, i wouldve taken that out, descreened the MAF, CAI and did some other free mods. i dont wanna F' up my moms ride!

bubba428 12-24-2007 04:26 PM

yea thats a good point...might make the computer flip out

NJSPEEDER 12-24-2007 04:38 PM

computer won't flip out. we removed it on foff667's 98 S10 and put rivets in the holes. picked up a good bit of throttle response and some power doing it :)

BonzoHansen 12-24-2007 04:50 PM

It's your Mom's car, leave it the f alone!

NJSPEEDER 12-24-2007 04:55 PM

this is ron. telling him to leave it alone is like telling a 5year old not to eat the cookie you just handed him. may as well give him advice on how to do the mod right and get it over with. lol

bubba428 12-24-2007 05:00 PM

HAHA

oh no, the voices, the voices!

EchoMirage 12-26-2007 06:07 PM

humperdink?

i had a 96 S10, vortec, and i believe it had that on the throttle plate also. i wouldnt do it, you might screw something up worse. how do you think the fuel pump is bad.....is it rough starting, especially in the cold? mine did that. i went through several things, including a fuel pressure regulator, before i did the fuel pump itself.

My 98 Did, Im the guy That Timmy is speaking of. We removed it but it will create two holes in the TB that will need to be plugged, you can just put in two rivets & be done with it though.

I never really saw the point to it but it may just be a handicap because of the horrible injection systems which more than likely lean out the front cylinders. Bad design.

JSPERFORMANCE 12-27-2007 07:50 AM

It is there to make the part throttle transition smoother, when you remove it with a stock tune it can develop a part throttle lean stumble in some cases. If it is your mom's ride fix the problem and leave everything else alone.

shane27 12-27-2007 10:01 AM

if you dont know what it is just tear it out...nothing bad will happen

it doesnt start if its warm or cold until i pour a bit of gas in the TB. I turned the key on and pushed on the schrader valve and only a little bit of gas trickled out, instead of me getting getting sprayed. plus i didnt recall hearing the fuel pump turn on. i have a walbro fuel pump laying around i might be able to swap out so i dont have to spend 389.00 or whatever it was for a new fp

EchoMirage 12-27-2007 08:52 PM

sounds like a fuel pump. theyre known for going in these trucks. i bought an airtex pump from a local store, it was only around 200.

98tadriver 12-28-2007 04:48 PM

hehe i have a spare walbro 255 that im going to install soon. thatll be my xmas present for mom! that thing is going to run like a raped ape when im done with it. (i didnt say when i get done driving it.. so it will stay together)
