Strange Transmission Problem

This is very strange. Me and a friend of mine were driving the car and we parked it in my garage, then we went to home depot and got food. Then we came back and put some new clamps on the boost tube, making sure not to hit or damage any wires or anything.

Then we started the car to test the pipes, car had weird idle. When you give it gas the RPMs drop really fast to normal idle. In park car tries to move forward but gets stopped by it being in park, then when put in R the car doesn't move, then when put in N car moves forward, D,1,2,3 act correctly.

Now when I checked the lines to make sure the pump was working, i found out that nothing was coming back out of the radiator, so i bypassed radiator trotally and i ran the trans lines directly into my trans cooler, bypassing radiator totally, and fluid moves correctly. Now,when I stuck the one end into a bottle to make sure pump works. I ran air into the radiator and chunks came out, seems like pieces from the old trans were in there. I need a new radiator anyway, so i'm not worried about that.

My question is: do you think some old trans pieces got into it and jammed a valve or something? I'm about to flush the whole system and just clean it all out and replace the trans filter. We didin't mess with tuning or anything, this just happened when we came back from about an hour.

When this happened there wasn't any strange smells, sounds or anything just didin't work. Trans temp wasn't overheated or anything either. This is a Stage 4 FLP transmission with 3200 stall. Now only thing original from other trans was the stall, maybe the stall went bad? I have to drop the transmission anyway due to i think my rear main seal is leaking badly, so either way trans comes down. I'm just hopeing it's not something huge.

BAD! You never install a new trans without flushing the old system especially when the old one blew, most likely you have metal stuck within the valve body itself which could mean time for a tear down AGAIN.

stalls usually go when the trans goes.

The converter might be ok, but it should have been flushed...seeing as how they didn't flush the trans lines in the rad, I'm betting they didn't flush the converter either.

I would get everything flushed before starting the car again, and then hope for the best. You could be looking at buying a new trans and converter.....

i sure as hell hope not man, i dont even have 100 miles on this trans. the verter more, but yeah i'm going to pull both, flush everything and fix my oil leak, and replace the filter and reinstall it all hopefully itll fix things. im so mad the car has been running perfectly lately and suddenly we park it for an hour and all hell breaks loose.

So you put your car back together without even flushing the system?

And you run a shop? I wouldn't take my car there thats for sure after reading something like this happening to your personal car.

Sounds like either you welded the forward clutches together or there is a blockage in the trans somewhere keeping them applied. Either way the trans needs to come apart to fix it, the converter needs to be cut cleaned and checked, also a new cooler will need to be installed.

+1 i agree

if the trans had gone bad and sent metal into the cooler or coolers they are both junk -- i have never seen a metal sprayed cooler ever clean again throw them away this time -- and this is what happens you spend good money after bad -- and as was said the converter has to be cut in half to clean it, non of the washing machines really do the job as well dont waste your money on doing it that way -- jz

the shop that installed my trans is a very good shop in this area, so i let them handle everything trans-related, so i assumed they knew what they were doing and flushed the entire system, so don't go jumping the gun there buddy. Also, the car's been working fine lately w/o any problems, suddenly we park the car for an hour, return and its all messed up w/o any early notice of anything wrong, so i'm not looking for critisism concerning my shop right now, i'm looking for some help with a transmission problem.

GrandmasterCow 02-09-2008 01:43 PM

so i assume no one has any ideas of whats going on?

Why don't you call the shop that did the work first? I would have had them on the phone that night.....

I agree, I've had shotty work done to my car and paid out the ass for it. The several people that recommended him to me now no longer go to him. :) (Al's auto, shell gas station, second circle in flemington nj)

98tadriver 02-10-2008 10:27 PM

Trigger85 02-15-2008 11:04 AM

my dad ran a tranny shop... clutches are seized, as js performance said. tear down time.

GrandmasterCow 02-19-2008 09:15 PM

trans is out, fixed bad oil leak behind block. cleaned radiator totally out(was clogged) also trans cooler, dropping trans pan tomorrow. fluid looks fine.
