from tbi to carb

i converted my 92 rs from tbi to carb now i cant get my car to start i put a mechanical fuel pump in i put gas in the carb the car starts but the pump isnt pumping any fuel i put in a glass fuel filter i allso cut a hole in the trunk with a air chisel to pull the eletric fuel pump out im a few steps away and im finished

Does the cam have a lobe for a mechanical fuel pump? I dunno if TBI cams did or not.

bubba428 04-12-2008 10:08 PM

wouldn't that have an OE roller cam????

BonzoHansen 04-12-2008 10:11 PM

That could be the issue. Should have just put a regulator inline and kept the tank pump.

Yes. But what difference does that make? My '87 came with a mech. fuel pump and a roller cam....

the engine is a 350 it was changed by the previous owner

bubba428 04-12-2008 10:19 PM

that would make a cam very expensive

You still could have kept the in-tank pump and just installed a regulator. And then you wouldn't have had to attack your car with an air chisel.

it was fun with the air chizzle in the future the hole is going to get welded and a fuel cell will be installed

i think the car had a cam it ran strong and idles rough

bubba428 04-12-2008 11:09 PM

then theres no way with out pulling the cam to tell if it has the loab

chrisfrom nj 04-12-2008 11:29 PM

im not going to pull the cam

Then you should just take off the mechanical pump now and install an inline electric pump. If it's a new pump and it isn't working, chances are good that whatever cam is in there has no provisions for a mechanical fuel pump.

The fuel pump pushrod goes in before the cam is installed right? I haven't messed with one for years, but you can't install or remove the rod through the side of the block right?

So the cam had to be pulled to install the mechanical pump. Right?

chrisfrom nj 04-13-2008 09:23 PM

i put in a new fuel pump push rod

did you use a bolt in the front of the block to hold the pushrod in place while you installed the pump? did you forget to take the bolt out? The pump wont work with the bolt left in...dont ask how i know this...

ive never seen a SBC cam without a mechanical pump lobe
