major oil leak

this is crazy. has anyone with a 455 pontiac ever had an oil leak and i mean a gusher. i was going down the track at about 5000 rpm and got a windshield full of oil spray. got to the pits and looked under the car and oil was puddling. ran the car and revved it and could not find any more oil coming out. the hood was covered with oil. the top of the engine was covered. the radiator and electric fan was covered. the driver side of engine and compartment covered with oil. pass side clean and fairly dry. nothing to worry about on that side. the crank seal did not blow out. back of balancer is dry. cannot find and sealer or gasket blown out and vavle cover gaskets dry. like is said crazy. i cannot find a hole anywhere. any suggestions???????????????

Only thing I ever had odd was I once had an oil filter seal fail on a 472 caddy and it sprayed oil everywhere.

"the radiator and electric fan was covered" - trans cooler or oil cooler? (not sure if you run an auto)

it auto with a trans cooler but this is strictly engine oil. i have been pulling my hair out since last friday and i am in short supply as it is. dont want to pull the engine again. definitely not the oil filter. that is on the other side of the engine as was dry and clean as the day i put it on.
it must of sprayed forward to hit the fan and radiator that shot back all over the engine and inner fender. this is first thing that i have not been able to trouble shoot and its p***ing me off. dont wish this on anyone but if its happened to you let me know what simple thing caused your grief. gotta get back in the action.

do you have a mechanical oil preassure guage? maybe the line got pinked/cut under your hood.

oil pressure line is on opposite side and in good condition. i checked it already though. i hope i find it before i decide to pull the engine, disassemble and reseal again.

pcv? timing cover? blow out from the dipstick? valvecover breather or gasket?

68pont455 04-22-2008 01:13 PM

no pcv no dipstick on engine. i have breathers running to the headers and they were fairly clean. alot of oil laying on top of engine. vc gasket was dry and it doesnt appear that the timingcover silicone seal was blown out. narrowing it down to intake bolts that i might not of sealed properly. or the valley cover. will find out if its the valley cover tonight.

68pont455 04-22-2008 07:40 PM

i think i found it. the valley pan silicone seal was very thin and weak at the front ds corner and down the driver side. i imagine that the initial launch popped the seal and as soon as i hit around 5000 rpm it opened up enough to let a burst of oil out. as soon as the windshield got sprayed it didnt get any worse. hope this was it. spent 2 hours tonight cleaning parts and removing the valley pan and cleaning that up. will reseal and try it again soon i hope. what a mess i got to clean up though. oil everywhere on the car and now on the garage floor. stuff just keeps dripping from all the nooks and crannies in the engine compartment.
