The general consensus is that the hot cam kit is not worth the price. You can do better with other parts that are cheaper.

band77one 04-22-2008 09:48 AM

why is that

Knipps 04-22-2008 10:14 AM

He said so i the same post, you can do better for the same amount of money spent.. the time, effort, and money spent doing the job would be better suited with something less mild

call and get a custom grind. tell them the heads your gonna use, what RPM your gonna be spinning to and how streetable you want it to be and they will recommend something

band77one 04-24-2008 02:18 PM

i dont know the rpm ill be "spinning". the car never sees the track. it will only a few times to get some numbers. other than that its just a cruise/weekend driver. i just want to build something with a little more power thats sounds real nice

i was lookin at this cam....
http://www.jegs.com/i/Comp+Cams/249/...760004%7C10707

anything with higher lift/duration or whatever needs torque converter and gears. and i dont want to do that, as this car is not something im trying to make super nasty lol i just want some decent power so the car is not ALL looks lol as it is right now

band77one 04-24-2008 07:16 PM

ok so im getting these heads....http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

and i think im going to go with this cam...
http://www.jegs.com/i/Comp+Cams/249/...760004%7C10707

i wanted to go with the .520/.515 lift but my dad thinks it might be too much cam.

the only things i know i need are lifters, pushrods, and im not sure does my car have rocker arms or roller rocker arms. oh, will i need to get pushrod guideplates?

You can do better than that for heads as well. Edelbrock's stuff works well but their designs are kind of antiquated these days. Same with their camshafts.

Stock a car will have "standard" rocker arms with a few exceptions. Your car is not one of them. Roller rockers will be aftermarket pieces. You will need pushrod guideplates if your rocker arms are not self aligning.

Regarding the cam-

What trans are you running? What are your rear gears?

band77one 04-24-2008 08:12 PM

my rear gears are stock and tranny is 700r4. thats the smallest tpi cam jegs has listed. but those heads are better. they are for a 350 im running a 305

Tru2Chevy 04-26-2008 07:40 PM

Those large 2.02 / 1.60 valves won't work well with a 305 - too much shrouding around the valves with the small bore of the 305.

Honestly if you are just going to be using it as a cruiser just stick an LT1 cam in it and do the basic bolt-ons. I know 305 guys hear this a lot, but it's really not worth the money to buy heads/cam specifically for the 305, because what works best in that motor won't be ideal for any other combo that you upgrade to in the future.

If your gonna go LT1 cam route, i have one sittin gin my garage if you want it.

BigAls87Z28 05-06-2008 03:24 PM

305 will respond differently to cams then a 350 would.
LT1 cam is a notch above an L98 cam. On my old 87, I went with a ZZ4 cam, which is a .495/.510 lift with good duration and civil lobe seperation.
As for heads, two major choices are the World Torquer S/R 58cc heads, a set of Aluminum L98 heads, or worked LB9'ers.
