To answer the question, though, I like 'em both and songs from each era, but I think Dave has an edge over Sammy.

Then I'll terminate this thread with extreme prejudice as well. Should spark a good discussion, though.

van hagar was ok. sammy added musicality to the scene, but after you've been in a band where the roles have been so clearly defined and then in walks a new guitar, there were bound to be ego issues. while dave's got the biggest ego around, he was still the frontman of the band, and he did his job well. that left everyone else to do what they do best.

IMO Van Halen is Van Halen. Eddie called the shots and Dave got a little too big for his britches. I love (Dave) Van Halen from my youth. When I grew up, there was Van Halen, and there was "I can't drive 55". Again, IMO when they booted Dave, they lost all appeal. You had Ed doing his thing, and Sammy trying to throw his influence in the mix. While the melding of things usually works, IMO they started out like egg whites. Blended good at first but got overbeaten and broke. Adding Wolfgang into the mix (Again IMO) drove the final nail in the coffin. Music is an art. To throw Wolf in there hinders his real talent, overshadows what his Father has already accomplished and diminishes what Van Halen was with Dave.

Then again I might be biased because Im "Hot for Teacher" (Wifes a HS Teacher) :D

DLR era VH >>> SH era VH, although I like both.

I've been a long-time Van Halen fan, and saw them for the first time as a young teenager back in 1988 at Giants Stadium. Hagar was already in the band, and they put on an amazing show. I saw them again a few times in the early '90s (Jones Beach, Continental Arena) and they were always a great time. I finally got to see Van Halen with DLR singing back in November, and it was a helluva show! In fact, my wife and I are going back to see 'em again at IZOD on May 13 since we had such a good time. I can only imagine what it would have been like to see them back 30 years ago in their prime though!

Since I haven't ever seen Van Halen in concert I only have my CD's so Sammy wins. :)

Diamond Dave over Sammy anyday. I dig both...but DLR is without a doubt the man who put and recently put-back van halen on the map. i hope to hit the msg or meadowlands show in may cash permitting...

I like both,but am partial to DLR. Van Halen wouldn't have been as big if they were fronted by Sammy first. Sign of the times....early 80's. Excess and flash
Dave is a much better showman.

I saw Van Halen back in November with David Lee Roth and am going to see them again next week May 13th with David Lee Roth singing, he is the best singer for Van Halen and always will be, can't wait to go. Later, Jeff.

i went to a lot of concerts when i was younger. van halen, of course, was one of the bands that i saw. i'd have to say that although their music isn't very musically intense, eddie's guitar solos aside, their hooks and melodies were what got your attention. dave was a part of that. so while there was some OK music that came out post DLR, it just didn't have the same quality as when they recorded with dave.

sure, some would argue that the music went up a notch once sammy joined the group, but the quality of music never got better. they churned out some songs in the late '80s and '90s, for sure, but nothing beats having all of the roles in the band clearly defined (expanding on my previous post) where everyone knows what is expected of them, can experiment inside of their pocket, and can concentrate on doing the best that they can. that change once dave left the band, because now they had two guitarists. egos clashed, and on more than one occasion alex was heard saying he couldn't deal with the band anymore - he would even just up and leave recording sessions. recording time is a premium, and the studios charge big bucks to let you use their equipment, so for someone to know that and still leave because of the clashes happening while recording, says a lot about what was happening at the time.

DLR isn't the best singer in the world, but he knows his job. look at the stuff he put out after he left VH. i mean, talk about a showman. and then when he got one of the best guitarists in the world, put him together with one of the greatest bassists of all time, and dave led the show... it was pure chemistry. and, again, the roles were clearly defined. here's the best bassist, able to concentrate on what he does best; here's one of the best guitarists able to concentrate on what he does best; decent drums, although not on par with alex van halen, but still someone who can lay down a solid beat; with dave doing all of his antics and what have you on stage (and in the studio, from what i understand)... it worked. unfortunately, the DLR band had a few too many egos in it, and they ended up seperating, but i knew at some point dave would have another shot at VH. and it's the '80s, all over again. one of the very best live shows i've ever been to. i am not much for concerts at this point in my life, but i wouldn't mind seeing VH again.
