Dodge Avenger

I've started to see a few of these around town, and I have to say, they turn my head every time I see one. Its like a little charger, but with a 30 mpg v6. Apparently also come in AWD, but I don't think i'll need that. I think depending on how the summer goes with my business, if it starts getting good and gas keeps climbing, I might look at buying one of these, possibly as my first new car. Anyone else like them too? I don't think I've seen any pictures that do them any justice in person either.

my friend with a charger R/T calls it a baby charger

BigAls87Z28 04-29-2008 04:37 PM

The Avenger is one of the most recalled cars of 2007 and 2008.
DO NOT buy this car. They are doing so bad, that Chrysler is now going through a crash course for a new program "Project D".
The V6 is a waste as well. 30mpg is great, but has zero power. The 2.4 and 6spd auto trans in the Malibu make 170hp and gets best in class gas milage. And you dont have to buy the ultra trim Malibu.

Frosty 04-29-2008 04:44 PM

I'm not sure how much they cost(the Avenger) but I'd take a new Malibu over the Avenger any day of the week and twice on Thursdays.

cant say i like the styling of the malibu.. at all.

BigAls87Z28 04-29-2008 05:26 PM

So you like that afterbirth you posted above...but not the 2008 North American Car of the Year?
Well...you DO drive a late 2nd gen, and a Sebring Coupe 4th gen......

Yeah, and Toyota won Car & Driver's truck of the year... whats your point? Awards are 90% bs.. The styling on the Avenger is aggressive and eye catching, hence this post, I never said I drove one, I never even said I sat in one, I said I SAW them. The malibu looks like any other mid size sedan on the road today, and honestly, I had to google it to remember how much I didn't like it.. that's how memorable it is.

BigAls87Z28 04-29-2008 05:35 PM

Well I guess you are the exception to the rule. The Malibu has gotten tons of praise from auto rags, who normally rip American cars to shreads.
The Avenger is the biggest hunk of crap. Interior trim is hard plastic all over. Its cheap and cheezy, by far the worst in the catagory. You are better off buying a Kia or Hyundai.
On top of the continious problems and recalls this car has gotten over the past year, its amazing that people still even entertain the idea of owning this thing.
Get any other car BUT the Avenger/Sebring.

And for the record Toyota won by default, not cause it was better. There were no other half size pick ups in the comparo. It was the Tundra, and the 2500/3500 Silvy and F250-450 line.

EVIL90SS 04-29-2008 05:39 PM

i dont think id ever buy a new gm car...they all look ******, but the chrystlers def have their styling in the right direction, toyota trucks baby !

this is my bitch...

you know what? You're a hunk of crap. stop kissing GM's tiny hiney and start looking at other manufacturers. I know you read a lot, and I know you can link me to various articles written by biased authors. That doesn't mean they're always right. I'm not defending the car, because I've never driven it. But I'm also not going to base any decisions on what people who get paid to tear other manufacturers apart say.

BTW, I still love you, even if you're crap.

BigAls87Z28 04-29-2008 05:49 PM

This is not a review. Sit in one. Its a piece of ****. Dodge has ZERO under control. Thier styling is ugly as sin. The rear kick up is such a goofy look for such a small sedan. The Charger is ugly, the Avenger is no different.
Why anyone would get a Charger over a G8, or why you would get an Avenger over a Malibu is probably a die-hard Chrysler fan.
This is not a GM bias, the Avenger is the biggest piece of garbage out there today.

Oh yea, there's that truck that you tell me you regret buying every time I talk to you ;)

BigAls87Z28 04-29-2008 05:58 PM

The Tacoma...is that with or without the rusting frames?

We could also talk about the "Truck of the Year" Problems with tail gates, driveshafts, transmissions, engine cams....and the fact that MT even published the fact that the truck has a ton of recalls, they chalked it up to "teething" problems.

Uh yeah.

Here is biased for you. I would rather drive a pink V6 2008 Mustang over an Avenger.

GP99GT 04-29-2008 06:02 PM

i know the old avenger was a POS...Chrysler is very hit-or-miss with their car reliability.

I do like the way it looks though, contrary to the belief of "everyone"

maroman88 04-29-2008 06:08 PM

ive seen one up close, it looks better from far away lol. i do love the charger, but this was jsut over kill to make the smaller cheaper car look identical

Knipps 04-29-2008 06:17 PM

Guess what?! Nissan trucks are soon to be built by Chrysler. oh snap!

BigAls87Z28 04-29-2008 06:23 PM

Thats Nissan trucks...not Toyota.
If Toyota wanted too, they could buy Dodge. Nissian is looking for a cheap way to make vehicles, and what a better way then to share the cost of a plant with another company that is already making them there.
The Nissan Titan and the Ram will be sister trucks.

Damn straight.

Somebody at work had a '99 with that problem. I crawled under there to have a look for myself and it was striking to see how quickly it deteriorated in almost 10 years. And I know a thing or two about rust repair...

Edit- She turned it in for 1.5x the max blue book value, which is what they were offering.

My GF's brother has one (Avenger), and my official review is as follows:

Meh. The End.

That about sums it up :)

V 04-29-2008 07:33 PM

i loved my old avenger, 1996, 140k miles, paid 100 for it after a ball joint broke while my friend was driving. then 200 in used parts(including a dodge windsheild banner and superbright fogs) and i had a great beater/winter car... then sold it on ebay for 1250.

BonzoHansen 04-29-2008 07:44 PM

I'd look elsewhere, but that's just me. I'd rather the new Vibe/Matrix. I've never liked most 'regular' Dodges.

LS1Hawk 04-29-2008 08:09 PM

When I was in HS one of my friends had an old Avenger and that thing was pretty bitching. Not crazy about this new one though. A little to gimmicky for me. And the fact that it looks like a squished Charger doesn't help either.

Rich189 04-29-2008 08:23 PM

I test drove one when looking for my beater granted it was at the low end of my spending spectrum but compared to even the colbalt the avenger handled worse had no power and felt more like a tin can... id look elsewhere just some off the top of my head the new matrix a camry a base model legacy/ impreza vw rabbit etc. all get 23mpg plus ive been getting 25 or so with my flat 6 legacy i bet the base 4 will do around 27-28

1_Hot_SOM_WS6 04-29-2008 09:08 PM

One of the guys I work with has an 08 Avenger....he really doesnt like it and cant wait to trade it in on a different car....never says exactly why he doesnt like it though.
