Anyone know how inspection really works?
Hey guys,
sorry to be bothering everyone with these dumb inspection questions. but does anybody on here know how inspection really works? 1) if a cop pulls me over can he check where i got my car inspected at? 2) whats the barcode for on the inspection sticker? is that meant for the police 3) if i do get it privately inspected, and bring it to the dmv do they check the old sticker where you got it from? 4) if a cop runs my plates does all the inspection info come up? by the way, im not asking this because im getting another fake sticker (learned my lesson from that)...but i might get it done at a private station who lets SOME stuff slide, i was just wondering how everything works about inspection. but i will have a cat on the car when its inspected. so dont grill me for that again everyone hahah. any knowledge on this subject would be appreciated. thanks for looking jon |

2. I don't know why it's there, but to the best of my knowledge, the police do not have hand-held scanners to check them on the street, so they're not for the cops. I believe it is more to ensure the sticker's validity within the MVC. It's another item that is not always easily counterfeited and can be spotted as fake by the cops, though. 3. Why would you bring it to the DMV after getting it inspected? Do you mean, if I get it inspected privately and two years from now take it to DMV, then no...again, as long as it's legit. 4. No. The police can run a plate and use the information to research your driver history (Abstract). They will know how many times you were ticketed or involved in accidents, but not how many times the car was inspected and where. Newer sytems allow police officers to make an entry when you're pulled over so that if another officer in another department using the same system runs your plate and/or pulls you over, they'll know you got a warning or ticket from the first guy. Hope that helps. |
thank you 79ta for the answers...it helped alot.
my next sticker has to be legit either way because im almost 100% sure the officer made some type of note about it on my record. |
the only person who will suffer in your situation is the private inspector. you can play dumb and they can find out who inspected it via the sticker number and fine them most. if you get "hooked up", you're legit!

If you get inspected, and they let something slide like tint or emissions, if for whatever reason the cop gives you a hard time about the sticker, say you did all your modifications after you got inspected. You're already in trouble, don't bring the man that did you a favor down.

the actual bar code off of the Vehicle Inspection Report isn't scanned for any reasons other than documentation, if at all. stickers are manually typed in as far as i know. i think the bar codes were supposed to serve more purpose but for the most part, they just look fancy. the sticker has your VIN and registration # on it sooooo good luck stealin one!

if you take a propane torch and heat up the glass on the outside the inspection stickers peel right off.
i have a question though, on obd2 cars they just hook into the cpu for emissions and not the tailpipe right???? |

You should feel lucky. A friend of mine was caught with a fake inspection sticker. The cops searched his truck for drugs. They ripped the whole interior to pieces and when they found nothing, just wrote the ticket and left. P.S. Most things that people consider bad luck isn't. Its stupidity. Just be smarter and you'll be fine.
