How do you guys pass with longtubes? Or am I going to need to switch em out for mids come inspection time?

what car? a 4th gen can pass so long as it has to codes/engine light. 3rdgen is a different story.

4th gen, but its OBD1 so does that mean anything?

Tru2Chevy 05-28-2008 05:29 PM

Well, if it's OBDI you'll still need to pass smog. Most times the inspectors won't bother you if you have a catted y-pipe (even though they aren't in the factory location).

Is this from experience or just hearsay?

I haven't personally taken a car with long tubes through inspection, but I know several people who have (not just random people from different forums) and haven't had issues as long as they have a catted Y.

Nothing is a guarantee once you start modifying - if you get an inspector that wants to be a stickler, sure, he or she will probably fail it. But most don't care as long as cats are there.

Ok cool cool, I have till next June to have fun with the combo now, and then hopefully I will have enough money to drop in a 355/blower combo with a more emissions friendly cam. And can I email anyone my pics? I cannot edit them to make them the right size to post.

You can email them to me, or just upload them to Photobucket or Imageshack.

Or download this: http://www.irfanview.com/ (great image viewer and basic editor)

Any thoughts on the "guaranteed pass emissions" stuff?

it doesnt always work, and if you dont have cats, and they look for them, it wont matter what you pour in the tank

grrrrrr i failed today wtf..

LTb1ow 05-28-2008 09:20 PM

How did you manage to fail? You don't even get a sniff test, right?

i cleared them right before i went, and then it went off when they plugged it in their computer. I usually pay this guy to pass me i did the last time and he didnt even test it he just put the sticker on there, now this time one of his workers charged me and failed me. Im pissed

LTb1ow 05-28-2008 09:31 PM

Get em programmed out of it?

sweetbmxrider 05-28-2008 10:00 PM

yeah if you clear it, you reset all of the monitors in the car and you fail. you can have up to 2 systems "not ready" and pass as long as everything else is good and you don't have emission codes set.

guaranty to pass and the like won't help you if you are cammed, barely work in stockers. better off making friends with a private inspector.

I know but im ordering credits for HP tuners so it will be taken care of

LTb1ow 05-28-2008 10:33 PM

Any one recommend a "good" private inspector?

V 05-29-2008 08:04 AM

emissions in NJ? whats that? lol im glad i got in as collector status just in time. to bad i never really drive it anymore

JL8Jeff 05-29-2008 08:06 AM

Mac mid length or ASM headers will keep the cats closer to the stock location and offer almost as much power as longtubes without the headache of less ground clearance if you lower the car. I put Pacesetter longtubes on my old 96 SS with dual high flow cats but ended up selling the car before going through inspection. That was OBDII anyway and the computer wasn't throwing any codes so it probably would have passed.

LTb1ow 05-29-2008 10:03 PM

Mid lengths will actually sacrifice a rough 10 rwhp at peak rpm compared to longtubes.

George Baxter had no problem making 700+ hp with his ASM midtubes so don't believe the stories about longtubes making a lot more power. If the longtubes are 1-7/8 vs the 1-3/4 midtubes then you'll see a bigger difference but if they're both 1-3/4 then it's really close. You get better ground clearance with midtubes if the car is lowered as well.

LTb1ow 06-06-2008 06:20 PM

Its not the Mids vs LTs, its more of the size of the collectors.
