TPI backfire
Ok so i basically have an MAF TPI system. a few weeks ago a plug wire got burned up really bad by the header. after replacing and rechecking everything a million times im getting some loud backfiring or popping through the throttle body on acceleration. it has brand new plugs wires coil icm cap and rotor. could this be the ESC? or am i headed in the wrong direction?
|
it could be anything.
same as always: check the basics. check for spark on all 8 cylinders (i assume by you checking a million times, that you already have). Check fuel pressure at prime, idle, and under a load. Recheck your base timing as well... after checking all that, see where you are at. By the way, what do you mean you "basically have a maf tpi system?" whats not basic about it? |

and yes i checked the fuel pressure and spark. have to look into timing |
yeah check the timing and make sure the plugs are gapped properly.
|
so you guys are saying that a burned plug wire threw my timing out?
|
well did you cross the wires then? was it running properly before? you replaced alot of stuff i am assuming at the same time. go over your work 1st.
|
no, a burned wire physically cannot throw the timing out. However, I seem to remember you having other issues with the car, so maybe now that you have all 8 cylinders firing the other issues are getting their chance to come to life.
Chances are, you didnt do everything 100% perfect during your swap. Check, and double check EVERYTHING you did as the first step. Then check, and double check the basics before centering on either a spark or fuel issue, because a backfire through the intake could be caused by either. On that note, if it is backfiring through the intake...you might want to invest in a new MAF. |
im going to go over it all again tomorrow. i did some research on chevythunder though, and that site is saying it could be the ESC module or the Knock sensor. i performed one of the knock sensor tests with no luck. so either the test doest work as described or the knock sensor is bad as well.

check the wiring for the esc wire, a tan wire i believe. i had a very similar issue on my monte. the wire harness got burned a little and burned that wire through, it would actually ground out to the headers and screw the timing up big time. i ended up pulling the inner fender well and repairing the section of harness and securing it out of the way, runs great now.
|
i did notice some burned wires yesterday and repaired them. i will have to dig deeper into the harness and see if more fell victim as well. thanks!

still popping, no clue why. any more ideas? anyone?
