Nationality

I am Egyptian and I am applying for internships. Which do you think I should choose? Would it be wrong to put African American to boost my application? Choices are above. If you vote, put a reason also

ar0ck 06-17-2008 12:21 PM

I'm pretty sure Egyptian is considered Middle Eastern which is a nationality.

WildBillyT 06-17-2008 12:23 PM

Jake-

Would you mind if I changed it up? I've got a demo scale from here at work that would be good. I always wanted to find this out myself. Same thing with height/weight.

FWIW, I was good friends with an Egyptian who applied for an African-American scholarship. They tried to deny him, he sued them, and won.

Egypt isn't middle east. only thing in common is language which is of Muslim origin, not national

i don't understand what your asking but sure.

For scholarships and grants, i might say choose African American to boost the application, but in an internship, you actually have to work with the people and that might give them the idea that you try to get away with things.

However, Egypt is really part of Africa, so you wouldn't technically be doing anything wrong.

Egypt is widely considered a part of the middle east... the same with Sudan, also in Africa. Turkey, as well; a part of Europe. The middle east doesn't have political boundaries; it's just a description of the region.

Sorry, brain fart. I wanted to do another poll for all the members to describe their nationality.

understandable. morocco is considered middle east as well. what i'm saying is egypt traces its influence back to Greece, which is European, and not to Iraq and that area.

CaysE 06-17-2008 12:57 PM

That's like saying I'm Irish because my great grandparents were born there. I'm not Irish; I'm American. ;)

Its been geographically considered the Middle East since the dawn of time  Its not necessarily all based on religion, its a geographic area.

but now your Irish-American. They are asking for my native descent, not my skin tone. Am I African-American or Caucasian. By definition I'm African American, but whose definition is that anyway? Is there a set guideline for this? Maybe I'm trying to justify taking advantage of a system thats designed to level the playing field for underprivileged people. I don't know. Right now my LSAC has me listed as Other. I applied to undergrad as African American with the exception of Rutgers which I applied as white. I didn't get rejected from any schools. African American makes the most sense to me.

Jake,

You may want to search around on the Internet and see what other people have done. My buddy Mike is not the only person I've heard of who has had to use the "Egypt is part of Africa" rule to qualify as African-American.

Also, what about people from South Africa? Some of them are as white as ghosts, but they are technically African.

Tsar 06-17-2008 01:19 PM

Nationality - Egyptian, Russian, Korean, etc
Race - White, A/A

Pretty sure they do not ask for nationalities, and as far as the race goes I think you would fit into "Others" unless they have a specific designation for you. I will agree with Alex about the Middle Eastern thing.

Savage_Messiah 06-17-2008 01:20 PM

Egypt is a part of the African continent...

I got plenty more maps, you wanna play that card?

Tsar 06-17-2008 01:44 PM

Do you see where Sudan is located? somehow its widely considered to be part of middle east. Do you know where Turkey is? I'll give you a hint - "middle east" - but ohh my god it's part of EUROPEAN union and its not even in Europe! OHHH MY GOD, I think the world is coming to an end.

Oh another thing, go to BBC's website and look into the Middle East Section, guess what's there Sudan. And I know perfectly well where its located, I took geography before you got to high school.

BonzoHansen 06-17-2008 01:49 PM

Now where is central middle east?

I did a massive search in this thread, and still cant find Egypt. Can someone point it out?

Their asking for race... Not particularly making comparisons here, but what do you think a South American would put as their answer? Its pretty much the same concept. Just put "Other" cuz your fine Egyptian race isnt included in the other options :D

Tsar 06-17-2008 01:58 PM

Since I'm bored, I'll add a little more to the whole African continent debacle.

Just because a country is located on the continent may not necessarily give them the proper destination. Such as Sudan and Egypt are located on the African continent but they are considered by many to be part of the Middle East. Just like the Scenario above, we have Eurasian landmass which is divided into Europe, Asia, and Middle East; do you think we should refer to them all as the same after all they are all part of the same continent. If we can divide one part of the world and call it different names we can certainly do the same to the other parts, and we have done so for a long time.
