BigAls87Z28 06-21-2008 06:35 PM

Hooooly crap! I jus turned it on...

Tru2Chevy 06-21-2008 06:42 PM

RIP Scott.

Sounds like he popped a motor near the finish line and the car ran out to the end of the track, through the sand trap, and flipped over the catch fence. Pronounced dead at the hospital just before 5:00pm.

From the Star-Ledger:

Quote:

Spectators at the track watched as Kalitta's car exploded, hit a sand trap, then vaulted over a protective catch fence. A slow-moving ambulance took the driver away.

That's a shame.......

JL8Jeff 06-21-2008 08:40 PM

Wow, that sucks big time. I would've hated to be there and see it happen. Just when you think there's enough safety stuff something like this happens to shake things up again. NASCAR had a rough run but they've come through it in much better shape so hopefully NHRA will get past this as well. Accidents happen no matter how hard you try to prevent them.

baddest434 06-21-2008 08:42 PM

Ii did'nt see it happen but i found this on another site. i watched it once thats probally enough for me. but if your curious to what happened heres a link

I just saw a short bit on ESPN news and actually found footage on youtube of the incident, not a good scene. I am surprised youtube hasn't pulled it, and double surprised that ESPN replayed the footage (that were the youtube footage is taken from). Not sure there is a lot you could do to prevent something like that, unless you go to 1/8 mile competition.

There is roughly 2200 feet of paved shutdown, then the sand trap. (google earth estimation).

I hope he was knocked unconscious on the original blower explosion, I wouldn't even want to think of the alternative.

Thoughts go out to the family.

JL8Jeff 06-21-2008 08:52 PM

Wow, that was a heck of crash. Either the explosion knocked him out or disabled the vehicle so he couldn't slow it down.

alamantia 06-21-2008 08:57 PM

it looked like someone in the camera booth caught a piece of the car

WildBillyT 06-21-2008 08:57 PM

RIP. That is really terrible.

Either way I think (and hope) he passed on pretty quickly. In the article I posted above they said the ambulance was in no hurry to get him to the hospital, and that usually means the worst.

I was at raceway park yesterday and saw him. I wanted to talk to him, but I didn't. Its such a shame. He was a good racer and a great guy.

Little more about the crash:
According to ESPN, he hit the sand trap between 250 to 300 mph.
Because he never pulled the parachutes, people are speculating that he was knocked conscience because of the blast.

RIP Scott. You will be missed.

madness410 06-21-2008 10:53 PM

Knipps 06-21-2008 11:06 PM

in the video it looks like the chutes came out, but melted immediately. they start pulling the chutes around 1000', which was before it exploded.

RIP Scott. Its another sad day in NHRA history.

nj96z28 06-21-2008 11:10 PM

man... I dont bring my car to teh track to run , but ive talked to him . holy suck. He will be missed.

enRo 06-22-2008 07:59 AM

Thats a shame. By the looks of it, he was knocked out during the first explosion and not the second. RIP

bandit88 06-22-2008 08:01 AM

i heard about it last night..... saw the accident on you tube and WOW

RIP :(

fastback79 06-22-2008 10:20 AM

Shut it off at 1000 feet. Past 1000 has been lethal.

GP99GT 06-22-2008 08:41 PM

from a guy on another site i frequent:

Quote:

As some of you guys know I live in Jersey and run this track all the time. I was supposed to be at the supernationals but had a family party that didn't allow me to take advantage of the passes a friend of mine on the track rescue squad got. I did however get alot of info from her...

The car never made the wall and detonated before it reached the sand trap... So even a longer runoff (which is already almost a half mile) wouldn't have mattered. The blower popped at the finishline and basically soaked the interior with fuel causing major ka boom.
