3970010

If anyone knows what that number means. Then you know how happy I am that I just found that number listed somewhere under my hood.

4 Bolt Main. Rather have a splayed block ;-)

JL8Jeff 06-26-2008 06:42 PM

That's a very common 350 block from 69 up until 80's or so. Could be 2 or 4 bolt. Nothing real special. What are you hoping it is?

GP99GT 06-26-2008 06:44 PM

didnt know if you had a 350 or a 305?

SteveR 06-26-2008 07:23 PM

the 010 should be high nickel right?

NastyEllEssWon 06-26-2008 07:34 PM

302-327-350 block
like jeff said. random 350 used throughout the 70s and 80s.
could be 2 bolt or 4 bolt. large crank journals though

010 is the number for high nickel yes.

Jersyboyy 06-26-2008 07:47 PM

Ahh some of you know what mortec is haha. High nickel yes 4 bolt main yes.Guy who doesnt like god(lol gp99gt)-its a 350 and about to start making some respectable power. Old school sbc guys know this block can handle serious power and has been known to be one of the strongest factory blocks. Their becoming harder and harder to find too.

NastyEllEssWon 06-26-2008 08:33 PM

Don't feel special, I have 2 of them.. :lol::lol::lol:

Jersyboyy 06-26-2008 09:21 PM

Sweet, iv heard of this block in stock for handling 600. Most guys get away with 500 but some have gone 600 with out doing anything special.

bubba428 06-26-2008 09:30 PM

I have one in my T/A and it hasn't failed me yet....you all know how abusive i am and it holds up to it. I have carb, intake, headers, cam, accell supercoil and some other goodies and haven't had an issue

badzracing 06-26-2008 09:37 PM

Stock iron block 6.0 ( ls1 style) can handle 1000hp...we don't need no stinkin nickels

bubba428 06-26-2008 09:59 PM

yea but can you spin 7,000 rpm without breaking stuff...my car shifts out of 2nd gear at 7,000 at the track...20 passes later its running better than ever

500hp is starting to push the limits of a stock block unless you drop a lot of coin on machining. A common thing used to be filling the lower half of the block with "hardblok" to keep the mains from walking. at that point it would probably be better to get an aftermarket block.

WildBillyT 06-26-2008 10:38 PM

Not to piss on your parade, but:

What you really want is one that says 010/020 underneath the timing cover and on the back of the engine where the bellhousing goes. Those are the most desirable of the factory gen 1 blocks.

It is my understanding (though I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time) that the casting number on the back (39700010) "doesn't an 010 block make". The 010 you want is under the timing cover and bellhousing area, not in the main casting number. If it was the casting number (397xxx) that denoted high nickel then it wouldn't be anything special- thousands of those things were made.

They are also not all 4 bolt main. Many are 2 bolt main. I've owned an example of each.

If you want to have some more fun, see if you can get the engine suffix code off of the block deck. That will tell you what the engine originally came out of.

If you have an 010/020 block then you are in good shape as far as factory blocks go.

Bubba,

Is your car even making power in that range?

BigAls87Z28 06-26-2008 10:50 PM

Probably not. It most likely stops making power at 4500rpm. But Vtechs dont kick in till 6k.

i bet that supercoil sure is hard on the motor

this guy speaks nothing but truth.

500 hp on a stock block is too much for the stock internals.

ls1 people dont spin much because theyre afraid to break the ten bolt out back. any 350 is gonna bring performance to the table in an fbody. the 305 was nothing but a boat anchor made to please those that wanted a v8. a stock m code 350 with 250 hp will pull 14 second passes in any fbody ever made.

Jersyboyy 06-26-2008 10:57 PM

It is a 4 bolt block that I know for sure. The 010 020 thing I read up on too and im hoping it is 010 or 020 that is the block wiht the higher amount of nickel in it. Im checking under the timing cover tom for that, and ill probally get the suffix code to just for kicks.
