exhaust ???

Hey guys. As many of you know I have a 91 camaro with a 1987 5.7 motor in it.. I have edelbrock shorty headers, are they good headers or no... My ypipe looks like someone riged it up to fit.. The 2 arms on it looks like 2.5 inch and they are welded into the rest of the ypipe, which is a 3.5 or 4 inch I forget... From there the rest of the exhaust is stock 2 or 2.5 inch... I have had the muffler off and it was still quit. But know my brother 93 z28 with a 5.7 in it, has bbk shorty headers in to a custom built ypipe into a 3 inch exhaust and with out the muffler it's loud...
Could it be my headers or my exhaust system.. Should I just buy a whole new exhaust system including headers to or what... Thanks for any help given..

Edelbrock headers are really good, they flow enough for a mildly modded motor. Sounds like all you need is a good catback now. I ran the Edelbrock shorties with a gutted cat and Flowmaster american thunder catback, it was not quite.

Does the car have a cat? that will quite the car down some.

Edelbrock stuff is bad in general. But you are running shorties, which are what smaller than 1 5/8 primaries? So it would be almost the same as running stock manifolds. My 2 cents.

Huh? Why do you say that? If their stuff was so bad why would so many other companies be ripping their stuff off?

LTb1ow 07-02-2008 04:18 PM

Ok sorry, more specific to later year stuff, OEM has gotten good at making a good factory piece, which kinda kills Edelbrock being that thats what they do right? Key example for me is the LT stuff, so I take back what I said.

The Edelbrock TES headers he would be running are 1 5/8" primary, and they are a pretty good piece. The collectors aren't an ideal design, but what shorty header is?

Kid Racer - On a mild 350 a Y-pipe that's 2.5" from each header merged into a 3" Y is just fine. I would get a nice 3" catback and you should see a nice improvement.

That is the first positve mention of the TES I have heard.

They are great compared to a log-style manifold. Certainly don't stack up with the LT choices for a 3rd gen, but they are great for a stock-lightly modded 305 or 350.

When I first started working on my car, I was looking into the TES for reasons of passing emmisons and a lot of power gain. And then researching it more, you find that you need to have it welded togther, and the power gains are a bit exargerated.

Kid Racer 07-02-2008 09:34 PM

Hey well any 4th gen camaros exhaust fit a 3rd gen camaro..

bubba428 07-02-2008 09:47 PM

NO...they won't...the undercarriage is slightly different...but then again with time and the right skills anything can work...I got 2nd gen headers in my T/A

My set didn't need any welding.....

:stupid:
Just get a Y-pipe and catback and you ar good to go.

I don't know anyone who has the TES headers that doesn't like them, or any edelbrock headers. If you don't think the edelbrock shorties will outflow a 1987 chevy log manifold you need to have your head checked out. They weren't a very good manifold. Now if you we're dumping shorties on an LSX engine, now you are pissing away some money. I've installed 3 stes sp far, what needs to be welded? On the dyno they made about 12 more RWH on a 89 TPI, not bad at all for a shorty.

Kid Racer 07-03-2008 04:31 PM

What is TES.

LTb1ow 07-03-2008 04:46 PM

tubular exhaust system

SteveR 07-03-2008 10:10 PM

I had the TES headers on my Hawk and loved em.

Hey guys if I take a super 40 flowmaster and put it right behind a high flow cat. Then run a 3 inch pipe to the rear axel and spit it off to put duals out the back. Do you guys think it will sound better and be okay....

No. Just do a 3" cat back. Better yet, have a shop do it.

WildBillyT 07-04-2008 10:18 AM

Tell you what. Post your budget and we will help you come up with the best system you can. Don't hack this stuff together or you will be doing it over.

LTb1ow 07-04-2008 11:59 AM

LTs to an X pipe with dumps?

Kid Racer 07-04-2008 12:39 PM

Okay I was only ask about the super 40 because I like that muffler and flowmaster dont make it for camaro's.. Okay lets see here I have between $200 and $450.. I want something that is going to sound mean and noticable but not so loud that cops will watch me.. It doesn't matter to me what it's made of.. I have a shop right down the road from me that will install it for me dont know how much...

Okay on a different note, is there any one here that is 5' 8".. That has a 4" cowl hood on a 3rd gen camaro.. I am asking cause I am thinking of getting one and every one is tealling me I wount be able to see.. I just want to see what you guys opinion on it is..

Kid Racer 07-06-2008 10:42 PM

ttt

chrisfrom nj 07-07-2008 11:25 AM

i have a 3 inch edelbrock catback for sale

V 07-08-2008 03:38 PM

who needs a muffler anyway, screw headers too

but seriously, i used TES headers on 2 vehicles, no real complaints... they dont make LTs for manual trans f bodies(3rd gens) or montes... so i was limited on choices.

flowmaster american thunder catbacks sound decent in my opinion or go magnaflow.

wretched73 07-08-2008 04:12 PM

I had a 4" cowl on my car for a couple days, i'm about 5'10"... couldnt see most anything out the right side of the windshield, you can see though if you sit straight up in the seat hahaha
