Damn laptop

thing kicked the bucket today, well sorta, battery has been crap for 6 months, tonight the charger started going in and out, seems to be a connection issue at the laptop itself :(

I was planning on buying a new one soon for myself anyhow, this just speeds it up I suppose.

2am and I'm having to transfer over my emails & crap I've had on here, not a good night...

firehawk1120 08-30-2008 01:08 AM

must be the month for laptops. Mine crapped out on me a week ago. Left it on overnight and woke up to a blank screen and just a ticking. Now it won't turn on at all but when I plug it in the ticking starts up.

:( don't have $$ for a new one and I have a lot of client info on there that I need to get off the HD.

Knipps 08-30-2008 01:13 AM

Sucks to hear about your laptops guys :-?
I've been messing with the idea of upgrading some of the parts in mine..
have to see if I have the money

That should work for what you need

firehawk1120 08-30-2008 10:03 AM

problem is the computer doesn't turn on so I can't transfer anything to an external since I can't get it to power up.

ShitOnWheels 08-30-2008 10:26 AM

Gene, how much do you trust me? I might be able to take the hard drive out of yours, then put it in an enclosure like posted above and get the info off of it, putting it on a thumb drive or something. Or, you can just keep it attached to your desktop until you get a new laptop, then transfer it all back.

foff667 08-30-2008 10:29 AM

Yeah I've used this laptop for all my work email so I've got a ton of stuff to transfer over. I got most of it done last night, just a bunch of old archived emails left to do.

Slo86Bird 08-30-2008 01:03 PM

i can probobly fix the charging problem. i di it on mine and it cost 15 bucks and about an hours time. best buy wanted 300 and 5 days. only problem is the power button doesnt shut it off so i have to unplug it. otherwise it works perfect.

firehawk1120 08-30-2008 02:46 PM

Genie,

It's my work computer so nothing is on there that is like top secret or anything. (i.e. porn. LOL) just a bunch of pictures from Fl., the baby, the house, some of my listings, but the main stuff are like letters and addresses of clients but that is all in word and excel type files.

I can bring the laptop to you and you can do it at your convenience next time I see you or James.

Thanks.

Drop it off whenever. Won't take me long, assuming the data is recoverable :)

Mac or PC

Well I picked up my new laptop today:

Compaq Presario CQ50-105NR
160 gb 5400rpm HD
1.9ghz AMD Athlon x2 Processor
Vista Home Premium
2gb Ram
15.4in HD widescreen
Double Layer DVD R/W w/lightscribe

It was the lowest of the low end models but the only feature I wish it had is a digital card reader. Everything else is perfect for what I needed. Best part of it all was the price of $379+tax

Just about unbeatable IMO.

Tru2Chevy 08-31-2008 07:40 PM

How does Vista run with only 2 gb of RAM?

Specs are similar to my wife's laptop (Hers only came with 1 GB, and I immediately bought 4GB to put in it.).

Mine runs well on 2GB, 1GB just doesn't cut it

foff667 08-31-2008 07:56 PM

2 gb seems to be fine and its expandable to 4 if need be. What I find amazing is my work laptop(IBM) from 8 months ago was over a grand and only came with 1gb, I also prefer the mic integrated into this laptop over the ibm(which makes some god awful reverb if you put your hand near the mic) which barely picks up my voice.

Very satisfied thus far.

jims69camaro 08-31-2008 09:31 PM

nice score for under $400...

firehawk1120 08-31-2008 10:26 PM

where'd you get it

Best buy in central jersey, online they are listed for $399, however when I got to the store they were actually $379 so it was a deal I jumped at.

how much bloatware did it come with

foff667 09-01-2008 08:21 AM

about a 1/3 less than the ibm one ;)

Seriously it comes with some but I've seen worse.

I will say its currently running 68 processes and sitting at 49% memory capacity now as compared to my xp desktop with 40 processes & using about 1/4th the memory.

foff667 09-02-2008 01:57 PM

Decided to run a few tests on my 3 pc's today

First up was my 2 year old Acer home pc Athlon 64 x2 2.21ghz

http://www.thetuningdoctor.com/Pics/Homepctest1.jpg

Work laptop IBM Lenovo core 2 duo 2.0ghz

http://www.thetuningdoctor.com/Pics/workpctest.jpg

The to my budget laptop

http://www.thetuningdoctor.com/Pics/...laptoptest.jpg

The only oddity I found was CPUZ was flipping back & forth between 1997hz & 1100ish hz for the clock speed, no clue why it was doing that.

Thanks James I'll try to bring out the home laptop next meet.
