cam choice for 305 tpi
i am swaping to tpi for my 305, i am putting on a set of #113 heads that are brand new off a zz4 motor with stock springs, if possible i would like to leave those alone and not mess with springs...
I am looking at this cam: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...4&autoview=sku The car is 86 iroc, 5 speed, 3.27 gears, and going to be TPI, headman torq step headers, magnaflow 3in catback exhaust. any thoughts? |
Link is dead....

I have a cam that I pulled from my 350 it was the 330hp/350 crate motor cam with matching lifters... was going to put it in my 305 that I pulled prom the monte, if you want it $50.
It made good power in my 350 and have a little loop to it. |
ok lets try this one..
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...4&autoview=sku its comp cams xtreme fuel injected series # 12-364-4 do you have a part number for that cam or anything? |
if your going to use tpi try this company out http://tpis.com/index.php?module=cat...draulic+Roller
|
If you already have zz4 heads try the zz4 cam. Theres a guy on the thirdgen.org site with it in his 305 tpi and it sounds great and has good power to go with it.
|
Go into the classifieds and see if anyone has a stock LT1 cam for sale. It is a direct swap and will give a solid power band up to about 5500, which is where the stock TPI runs out of breath anyway. It is a hydraulic roller, which will have a little better idle quality and a touch more power and it is also a much cheaper option than getting a catalog cam.

Its an 86? Its not a roller block, so you will need a flat tappet cam, unless you have a roller block swapped in there.
I have the ZZ4 cam in mine, and it sounds pretty good. Little big for the TPI setup as far as breathing, but nothing an aftermarket intake cant fix! |
I think you should just buy my 350...its already got a lunati voodoo cam and holley intake manifold...car ran mid 13s
|
good idea, he can spend many times more money to get to the same result

Those are the specs on the cam... Can't get much cheaper, with lifters |
motor is flat tappet, and actually one or a few lifters are bad so they need to get replaced anyways. i was thinking lt1 but again its roller and im not putting money into converting a 305 to roller cam, for the money a 350 would def benefit. yes i know a 350 is a way better investment, but im in college and dont have much money right now and my 305 has less thank 1k on it so it wouldnt make sense to just ditch it and i had the 113 heads laying around so why not use them?
njtorque, how many miles are on the cam? and i heard somewhere you have to match the lifters to what cylinder they were on because of the flat tappet? is that correct? |

I have the lifters matching with which lobe they are from. But you could always use new lifters as well.
there is only about 2k on it when I took it out for a bigger cam. |
thanks for the offer njtorque, but im going to go brand new, just so if anything happens i have someone to yell at and complain to aka summit haha.
but i think i finally decided on a cam: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...t=CCA-12-262-4 i heard some good things about this one and i was looking at one similar before, i also was reading that it will work good on a stock tune until i can get an aftermarket chip or tune. let me know what you guys think? OH and one more important thing, what head gaskets do i need? 305 or 350's? and what thickness? the block is stock as far as i know. |
anyone with the head gaskets? i dont want to order the wrong ones. and are there ones that boost compression? not much just a tad or so would be nice.
|
113 heads would be great, but remember you are going to lose your EGR since the alum heads do not have the EGR crossovers.
You are also going to need a centerbolt intake since the 113's are off a roller motor. Pick up quality felpro gasket for a 305 off summit. Check it out.. http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...115+4294891421 |
yeah i know about the egr, im going to get the delete chip to start, but eventually im going to get the car tuned to do it the right way.
I am definitely using fel-pro gaskets, i am just wondering on the size. i heard you have to use 350 size gaskets because of the heads but i dont know? |
Yeah, well they are all the same for teh most part, 4.100 bore or larger. 350s have a 4 inch bore, 305's a 3.8xx something.
|
Use the gaskets the match your block.....
And no Al, 113 heads still use the old intake bolt pattern, even though they are centerbolt heads. - Justin |
ok looking at a LUN-60101LK lunati cam for my motor, anyone use theses cams before? are they good?
|
I have a brand new (old stock) hydraulic flat tappet cam here I can give it to you for $50
Here are the specs: Lift - .442intake .465 exhaust with 1.5 rocker duration @ .05 - 214 intake 224 exhaust Josh 215-783-4645 |
