Won't Start?

Alright i have been talking to this guy who has an 88 iroc that he is thinking about selling and im considering buying it but i wanted to see what could be causing the problem first. He said that with a new battery it would only start if you put the gas to the floor and held it there then i would sit at like 5grand but as soon as you let out the gas it staled immediately any ideas?

Could be something as simple as a fuel filter.

Dilley 09-23-2008 05:41 PM

anything else like injectors pinched fuel lines

Is there hesitation when it revs up to 5k RPMS? How about does it hesitate/stall if you very slowly let off the gas when decreasing from 5k RPMS?

Always start from cheapest/simplest then work from there, buddys truck wouldnt start (same symptoms as the car your describing), i preached to him the fuel filter, he disagreed, he cleaned all the injectors, tested the fuel pump, injector pump, changed several lines, nothing..... then the fuel filter.... started first try

its jordans iroc shes given up on it and possibly selling it i just wanted to see what it could be before i bought it jsut keep it on the dl for now

and trel im pretty sure he replaced fuel filter

and im not sure if it hesitates or not ill ask

wretched73 09-24-2008 07:07 AM

You can never bee too sure! plus there are like 15+ fuel filters

Dilley 09-24-2008 12:06 PM

15+? that cant be accurate

wretched73 09-24-2008 08:54 PM

it was an estimate

V 09-25-2008 08:11 AM

theres 2, one inline like under the drivers side back seat and then the sock on the pump itself

Dilley 09-25-2008 09:13 PM

so really like an inline filter and a strainer on the pump

but any other ideas

black95maro 09-25-2008 09:19 PM

i wouldn't buy it.

wretched73 09-25-2008 11:43 PM

I was close. As long as the injector pump isnt shot it shouldnt be to expensive to repair yourself. (Heard they run for a couple hundred $$ or more)

injector pump???? those are on diesel and DFI.
a basic fuel pump is maybe around the 100 buck range

WildBillyT 09-26-2008 03:45 PM

Check the fuel pressure, see what it's at.
