What a horrible night...should be a good read

Well I had everything planned out, a little too planned out. I got a break from work and scheduled an energy audit in S. Jersey and figured when I'm done, I can go visit the Mrs. for a few hours and then head to the track just as it opens.

Well all this happens and I'm the first in line ready to break 11's. I set the nitrous, tire pressure, and am all ready to roll.

First run, I attempt to baby it out of the hole for the first run and it bogs horribly. I nail the throttle to get going and am greeted with a lovely nitrous backfire. I immediately get out of the throttle and pull over. Now I notice that the engine is bouncing off the 6500 rpm rev limiter for some odd reason. I rush to turn off the nitrous (thankfully it won't engage at that rpm) and turn the key off. I pop the hood and the nitrous backfire not only blew my ram air grills out of the hood, but separated the front edge of the hood so when you pop it you see lovely fiberglass. I was also lucky enough to get a couple very fine cracks on the top side before the scoop. Not horrible but everyone knows how meticulous I am.

The bouncing off the limiter was due to the nitrous backfire pushing the WOT activation switch in the way of the throttle assembly causing it to stick open a fair amount. I pushed it out of the way and fired the car up. Seems to sound fine surprisingly. I pull it down the track and check it out in the pits. Everything is in order and I go over things a few more times.

Next run out I am vs. a modded GN. I get a ****** launch and proceed to obliterate the modded car with a new best MPH (119.59 mph) vs. his 110mph run. Still no 11's. Engine sounds fine so I figure I'm good to go.

Next run the track hooked incredibly hard and I bog badly but didn't want to go WOT because of what happened on the first run. Suffice to say this run was trash but decent MPH.

Last run...I'm ready. I line up and spin the tires quickly. I pull up ready to give it hell. I get the best launch I have ever done in this car and I go to pound second and boom nothing.....the throttle is on the floor and I try to coast down the entire track as best I can. I pull off and have to get towed to the pits.

As my dad is fiddling with the cable which snapped due to the nitrous backfire from the first run and finally let go, I go ahead and call AAA. My grandmom told me she would be cutting me off a while back which was fine but the card said good until 2010 so I figured I was good. NOPE. I don't have any AAA so I go ahead and sign up but informed that my Plus membership will be good in 7 days. To tow me today 70 miles it will be a free 3 miles and then $4/mile after that..... I told him I will call him back.

In the meantime my dad somehow saves the day as he usually does and just so happens to have a small cable clamp. He gets it secure and the throttle works. I make it back up to my garage and pull the car in. To top things off, I also noticed that I almost ran out of the gas on the way home.

What a F@^&%*( NIGHT!!!!!!!

that sucks man, but always remember, it could have been worse

Wow Brian, that sucks. How bad is the hood fubar'd? And did the backfire do any other damage you think?

Ian 10-14-2008 10:55 PM

holy crap Brian! that sounds awful. glad you're okay and it seems the motor is okay.

bad64chevelle 10-14-2008 11:29 PM

Damn Brian, I was wondering where you went. I was behind you in the burnout box when you had the backfire...scared the crap out of me. Was a decent night to race, I got Martin's Lightning to the 12s.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn son.

You should have yelled out a F&F quote when you blew it all apart.
Needless to say...you blew the welds on the intake.
Better call the mad scientist.

Hood really isnt that bad. On the underside it just opened up a seam but I'll be getting it fixed ASAP. I can't stand when my car isn't right.

At this time and based on how the engine acted the rest of the night, it seems fine and like I said, I pulled a new best MPH ever after the incident.

Bad64- Glad you got the truck into the 12's. It certainly had it in it.

BigAl - Yea I should have said "Bro" & "Bra" to everyone in the pits to top it off.

Everything appears ok but I will be taking everything up to the intake manifold off to inspect and make sure everything is up to my standards.

Right now I'm pretty demoralized but I'm sure I'll bounce back. Just need to cool off a bit.
